Nothing like a 67.5 ERA to start the season

Its clear yall didnt watch the game, he wasnt sharp but his CF misplayed two outs that counted as hits...the second one with the bases loaded due to the first one and it cleared the bases. They were counted as hits but both should have been outs.

I mean if he had a CF that could catch a simple fly ball

The outfield misplays cost him runs but Skenes wasn’t sharp at all. Two walks, a hit batter, and a sharp single by Soto in 37 pitches. Maybe some effect from the WBC? Idk

2-2 and he likely settles in if his center fielder wasn't smoking Fent for the entire inning

It's possible Skenes is a bit drained from the WBC as well. I applaud him for showing out for his country though, unlike scumbag Skubal.

He didn't misplay shite, there were less than 2 outs. The strategy was playing the center fielder deep to guard gaps and charge on contact to get the out at home, either runner on 3B or 2B depending on if it got down. Unfortunately for the Pirates that ball was smoked and would have been a tough play either way. Skenes was also lucky to not give up a 3R HR on that sweeper/curve he put on a tee for Robert Jr

Baw took 1 step forward, camped out, then lazily jogged and it went over his head by a foot. Easy play if he keeps his fundamentals. Runner tags. 2-2. Catch routine pop up next batter. Pirates go to the second tied 2-2. Wasn't a great inning by Skenes, but it was far worse by Cruz.

He didn't misplay shite

I don’t give two fricks about Paul Skenes but the cf charged in on a ball over his head. Clearly misplayed.

Terrible troll thread by someone who didn't bother to see the context that his fielders completely blew it

He's supposed to charge on line drive contact, the expectation is it will almost never go that deep and there will be a potential play at the plate. But that ball was absolutely hammered so much so that the MLB has apparently decided to hide the exit velo

You are overthinking this. It has nothing to do with strategy, and everything to do with how he misplayed it. You’re like the scout who didn’t watch the play, but you have some spreadsheet with exit velocity.

He was deep against a guy with plus power and running in on contact was the strategy with runners at 2nd and 3rd w/ less than 2 outs.

Guard gaps to prevent XBH, charge on contact to protect home plate vs line drive. If it's a deep fly ball, you have time recover. If line drive gets down, you stop runner at 2nd from scoring. If it's catchable, might be a play at the plate from runner on 3rd and forward momentum running in with help with throw velo.

But that ball was smashed, how often do you see a line drive almost reach the warning track on the fly to dead center?

There's your strategy, point blank. Very rarely do you see a ball hit that deep to center on a line drive. It wasn't misplayed, it's simply not part of the equation because it doesn't happen frequently enough to make the strategy -EV

That's weird. The Met radio broadcasters described it as misplayed but thanks for setting us straight.

MLB hid exit VELO on that ball, how often do you see that?

Played for lsu, can't do any wrong. Always someone else's fault, the cf, the o line, the defense. Never the fault of the lsu player
