I think you will see more incentive and back end laced deals going forward.
isn't one of the few actual NIL rules that they cannot be incentive or performance based?
I guess incentive doesn't necessarily have to be isolated to strictly on field performance but you get what I'm saying

is it though?

With NIL in college, the old joke about Dickerson taking a pay cut to go pro will soon be a real thing.

Just end college football and create a semi pro league.
The academic side is a farce at this point.
Like others have said, nothing has changed. It's just out in the open now.
When I was in school there were players taking elementary school level math classes outside of the general curriculum and getting test answers for other classes before the tests were given. I took a scuba diving class and the only person who could get credit for it was Vinny Testaverde because he had some fake major and he passed by only showing up once.
Bennie Blades and Michael Irvin drove around in brand new sportscars. Even as a nonrevenue athlete, my coach gave us textbooks to resell to the campus bookstore so we could have some cash.

The portal is much more of an issue than NIL. Paying players was happening anyway. Being able to entice a player with a cool $mil and immediate play is a different story. The immediate play rule has destroyed any semblance of roster stability for most teams.
There are a few ways to help...
1. No immediate play unless the player is draft eligible. If they player can leave for the NFL, he should be able to leave for another program.
2. If you keep immediate playing time, you must have a transfer deadline. Eliminate early signing day. Set the transfer deadline to 11:59 pm Dec 31. If you transfer after that date, you must sit. This allows teams to actually recruit to fill holes instead of scrambling when a player leaves in February, or worse yet, July. Exceptions would be grad transfers and programs that are placed under NCAA sanctions.

quote:Already exists. May 1. Putting it at December 31 is unfair to kids who go through spring ball then get told their scholarships aren't being renewed for the next year (which happens regularly on the school side). If you're gonna set the transfer deadline for 12/31, you have to hold the schools accountable to the same timeline. Which doesn't make sense because many players don't opt to go pro till spring semester.

The "labor expense" will ultimately be tied to revenue like it is in professional leagues, but only after the players are legally recognized as "labor" with the right to collectively bargain.
The answer is to eliminate athletic scholarships

Organizations like TAF will pivot to paying players instead of coaches. The problem is the transfer rules allow players to leave each year. That means revenue will have to be budgeted for year over year expenses.
The internal politics of those organizations will be very interesting. What big business will pay to get the rights to the All American QB and which local eatery only gets the second string DE?

It doesn’t need to be sustainable. If you shut it down tomorrow, it has already moved the biggest spending programs ahead of where they were, and they will stay that way for a long time. The worst possible thing for programs like Bama and A&M would be for NIL to continue unregulated because that would give other schools time to catch up and them a chance to slip back. Those teams should want regulation soon, whether they know it or not.

I just cannot see donors coughing up 50 a million a year for many players that are not going to pan out. What am I missing?

I doubt it would go that route because of the money involved, but it would force some big time change.

You vastly underestimate the need to win for people at places like Bama. It is their whole sense of being. It is about bragging rights. It is their world. They will give what they need to give. They are 100% committed to winning and will do whatever it takes. They will go to parties and brag about who gave the most to get a player. Things really haven't changed except that now it is legal and the money is getting bigger.

There is also the school of thought that having a NC winning program provides significant, tangible, economic benefits to a school. Alabama alumni donations and student enrollment have soared since Saban re-established its winning tradition.
If students are going are choosing to go to a school because of football dominance, then I question if these are really the types of students that's going to academically elevate that school.

Explain the difference in enrollment from pre-Saban to today?
2007 - 25,580
2020 - 38,320

I would pay a monthly fee to get access to team gear that isn’t made available to the public

People need to stop worrying about NIL. Things are crazy right now. They will be for a few years. Wait until you start seeing some of the top NIL programs like A&M do literally nothing with their purchased talent. Things will balance out naturally, as they always do.
