I think one of the unintended consequences of the state of CFB will be quality coaches leaving. NIL, the state of recruiting, transfer portal etc all seem like major headaches for college coaches to handle. Today was one of the first major examples I can think of where it seems this is the case.

Boston College HC Jeff Hafley is leaving BC to be the Packers DC. Hafley has brought BC to bowl eligibility in 3 of his 4 years. No small feat for a program like BC.

“He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source told ESPN. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore." - Pete Thamel

Don’t blame them.

NFL OC/DC has to be a nice gig. One decent season, you’re a hot name. A bad season, get fired and just retread with another team. No recruiting 18-25 year olds, no booster kiss arse, no media, get to sit in press box all game with snacks.

Bye, these HCs get paid handsomely to manage young men and NIL is the new thing on their plate, so deal with or there will be another coach who will

Also the way the CBA is written, there is only so much off season activities you can actually do.

Yeah but that doesn’t limit the office work those guys do. The good coaches are obsessed with film, scouting etc. And I can see where dealing with constant bullshite the new college world provides steers some of them away from it.

And money will pull them right back in if they really are good.

Even if it’s less, you’re going from $3 million a year to $2 million. That ain’t like going from $200k to $100k. Plus you actually have an off-season.

I’m not sure if I agree

You can be paid millions to be fired. Not sure how that works if you walk away

College coaches do that too…plus spend a ton of time year round traveling for recruiting. At least in the NFL, he can do offseason film study at home and have time to spend with family. College coaches are constantly on the road to recruit, even in the offseason

Which is exactly why I’d argue we’re going to see an exodus of good college coaches dip to the NFL even if it’s considered a slight “downgrade.”

Old heads may move along because they just don't want to build the requisite skill sets to work in the new world but there are plenty of coaches to fill any vacuum that occurs.

Lots of people retired when various industries computerized or otherwise changed significantly, it is to be expected: next man up.

The transfer portal is the biggest issue. NFL players are at least on some sort of leash. College players can jump ship anytime they want to with zero consequences.

The reason they’re moving along is because said new requisite skills fall outside of the realm of coaching entirely

The vacuum isn’t going to be filled with coaches, it’s going to be filled with babysitters and marketers and politicians
