Surely at some point he becomes JoePa/Bowden right? A grumpy unrelatable old man trying to recruit and coach 18 year Olds he doesn't understand or like.

For comparison, Saban turns 71 in a couple of months.

The season Bowden turned 71 was 2000. Florida State finished the year 11-2, losing the BCS National Championship game to Oklahoma. FSU reached the BCS NC game for the 3rd straight year and they finished the year ranked in the Top 5 for the 14th straight year. Very similar to Bama’s current streak, obviously minus a few National Championships.

Now here is the interesting part.

Bowden coached 9 more years. He had a single 10 win season after that and FSU never finished a season ranked in the AP Top 10 again. The cliff came quick and out of no where. Don’t remember anyone saying after the 2001 BCSCG that FSU’s run was over. For proof, they started the following season ranked 6th and the year after that ranked 3rd.

They were ranked #3 in November of 2003. I remembered them being one of the teams we needed to lose for LSU to have a shot. They were ranked in the top 5 at least halfway thru 2004 and 2005 seasons as well. It wasn’t until 2006 that they really fell out of contention for good.

As for the 14 year run, I always wonder if he would have won more titles if there was a 4 team playoff and he got mulligans against Miami like 2011 Bama did.

Alabama just lost out on a National Championship because the 4 team playoff gave Georgia a mulligan. So I guess that’s even

I agree. I don’t ever remember being this unexcited about a season. All the portals and nil deals have kinda turned
Me off…. It’s gonna be the same as every year. A combination of like the same 5-6 teams.

He’ll be gone long before that deal expires. The new landscape of college football does not suit Saban’s style.

The new landscape of paying players openly?

That style fits him perfectly. He has had the best rosters every year because of paying players. This guy isn't Yoda. He has the best roster and is favored in every game he coaches.

Don’t think those rankings halfway through the season mean much of anything obviously.

Just look at Les Miles. He had LSU ranked high in parts of his last few years here. shite, in his last full season, LSU was ranked #2 in the country in November and heading into Tuscaloosa to play #4 Bama

2011: National Champs
2012: #5 in November
2013: #6 in October
2014: #14 in November
2015: #2 in November
2016: fired 4 games into the season

I sure hope he suggests Houston Nutt to succeed him again.

Yeah I think it’s gotten bad for CFB, and it was trending that way even before NIL and the portal. Bama is basically recruiting a National All Star team at this point. Similar with tOSU. The same 4-5 teams every year is boring. We need at least 1 year without any of Bama/Clemson/tOSU/OU in the playoff we were close last year, stupid UGA s the bed in the SECCG
But a playoff with any Pac12 team. A Big12 team besides OU, PennSt or Wisconsin and say Miami or Va Tech would be glorious

Meyer taking over Florida is what really killed Bobby.

He’s probably been at that status since he’s been at Bama. Hell, the last decade or so he was probably older than most of these kids that he’s recruiting grandparents.

You think 4* and 5* recruits are worried about playing for a coach that’s relatable or one that wins and gives them the best chance at the NFL?

On a 100% related note I have zero excitement for this CFB season

That was how I felt last year, but a little more excited this year to see what Kelly brings this year.

I mean Bowden retired at 80. Saban will coach as long as he wants.

I have said he won't retire anytime soon. Can't believe people were talking him retiring for the past few years.

He is here to haunt us as long as humanly possible.

Well that makes it official,,CFB is officially over for me...Brady and Belichick were bad enough in the Pros...these days CFB is the Pros with the same teams every year.
