Isn’t a fumble backwards in the field of play treated the same?

No, it's not. A fumble forward comes back to where it was fumbled, a fumble backwards is spotted where it went out of bounds.

It does “feel” wrong that in all other circumstances where a player fumbles the ball forward and it goes out of bounds, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble. Yet this one results in a turnover. Yet at the same time, fumbling through the end zone has always carried with it this penalty. I like keeping it as is, but I definitely understand the argument.

I see your line of thinking, but the end zone IS different from the field of play - teams are rewarded with points for advancing the ball into it or penalized for getting tackled in it by giving points to the other team.

Ultimately we both agree the rule needs to stay as is.

Just coming here to say this.

Keep it the same. Nothing wrong with the rule.

Would someone entertain 1 point to the offense and followed by a kickoff like any other offensive score?

Huh? How does risk/reward come in to play for a player fumbling the ball running into the endzone?

I don't get it. What is the risk here?

Dont just downvote like dumb sheep, someone explain.

Ultimately this rule comes into play so rarely (likely because most players know they need to take extra care of the ball in the end zone) in fine with it staying. I hated it growing up but it’s grown on me.

Protect the football at the goal line.

The rule is fine as it is.

How about the defense gets the ball on the 2.5 or 5 yardline instead of the 20?

I could get behind that.

If you believe this then obviously you would support the same if it happens on the other end of the field? If the offense is backed up on their end of the field and and RB goes on a run around the corner has the ball punched out about the 2 yard line and the ball rolls into the endzone and out of the side or back of end zone I guess you are ok with giving the offense the ball back at the point of the fumble?
What?

If an offense is down to the goal line, it's mostly because they got themselves there. Why should there be a weirdly asymmetric penalty for a fumble?

When an offense is pinned back on their own goal line, that largely because the D put them there. Why wouldn't the D be rewarded for consummating such?

Punts inside the 5 puts an offense at the goal line.
