So why is he one now?
Because of Josh Allen

Not that it makes the decision any better, but you could say this about Josh Allen coming out as well, which is the dragon they are chasing.
And most people on earth are bad QB evaluators, NFL front offices included.
I can't speak to Josh Allen in college, but I saw Richardson play in person in college twice and walked away thinking "I hope he has more eligibility because he fricking sucks", despite solid talent around him at Florida. When 99% of the world is saying he isn't a good quarterback, even the fans of his team, he's likely not a good quarterback. He is not good at throwing the ball, which is an important trait of a QB. And he couldn't read the defense worth a shite.
Josh Allen is a fluke and a real late bloomer. Also have to imagine if he had better teammates around him in college he would've done a bit better.

I'm convinced there are many college QBs out there who lack athleticism but can process the game and have that "it" factor but never get a shot because of the "measurable". The Brock Purdy types. There are Brock Purdy's in the NCAA every year who could become decent NFL QBs.
I agree with this.

That article paints the entire organization unflatteringly
They are trying to make him out to be the next Josh Allen and stupid scouts and GMs wanted to be the ones who hit on it when no one else saw.
It reminds me of the Trubisky pick by the Bears only worse by a lot.
No one ever questioned Allen’s drive, work ethic. His only big thing was the level he played in and his lack of accuracy which is harder to fix in the NFL. He is a tough SOB though and a hard worker that wanted to get better and has each season.
In the end, too many people want to be the next genius to find the diamond in the rough. Hell look at Payton while with the Saints wasting picks to find the “Next Taysom” only to cut the kid before camp.

Purdy was injured going into the draft but was a really good college QB. He lacked the optimal measurements but was a lower tier Brees type player in college.
Should have gone round 2 maybe 3 but injury and idiot GMs caring too much about combine numbers looked over him.
Same happened with Brady.

At least he was really good in college
Russell’s issues were a lack of drive and dealing with significant loss in his family right when he got drafted. Plus going to a disaster of an organization didn’t help.
He would have been a solid QB in the NFL with time, but he mentally broke down. It’s on him in the end, and doesn’t make him any less of a bust, but it wasn’t from an ability stand point.

I saw him play in high school. I saw him play in college. I've watched him on tv in the NFL. He's been the exact same player at every level. Big, fast, freak athlete. Who is always injured, and probably one of the most unprepared, inaccurate passers, I've ever seen.

I still remember many people being so hyped for this guy coming into this year. He played in 4.5 games last year. Had a handful of good plays and still super raw. So it was quite baffling why quite a few people (including some on this board) were certain he was going to breakout.
Thing is rocket arms and fast running resulting in WOW plays cloud people’s judgement. That extends to NFL front offices too because they think the mental side of things can be fixed

Milroe is getting drafted in the 1st. NFL teams are dumb as frick.

The Colts knew Richardson’s development was going to take time. He was 20 years old. He’d started just 13 games in college, where his completion percentage was a dismal 54.7.

You don’t try find a diamond in the rough with the 4th overall pick

amazing how dumb most executives in pro sports are.
What I can’t fathom is how some of them think that a kid who wouldn’t work hard for the opportunity to one day make millions is going to magically find work ethic after giving him millions guaranteed up front.
If you think the raw talent is so elite that the preparation won’t matter then that is one thing. But don’t draft someone thinking you can motivate him to start caring.

IF you can develop him, you have a superstar for a decade. Like someone posted above, there's probably a dozen college guys who could be "decent" NFL qbs. You don't want decent.

Assistant GM Ed Dodds was initially skeptical, calling Richardson’s one season as a starter at Florida “a roller coaster,”
Random sports fan Joe could’ve told the entire organization this, yet they STILL picked him. I just don’t understand why GMs do this nonsense. Picking a 3 year anchor to appease the public should be grounds for termination

Ticker is saying AR is out again with back spasms. How is this possible? Don't they still have playoff chances? Sauce up on the tramadol or something and get out there.

The Colts owner I think made the pick himself. Probably while high on Oxy.

NFL used to discriminate against black QB’s
Or did they practice meritocracy rather than DEI?
Does the NBA discriminate against white forwards?
We seriously need to take color out of everything.

Seems to me his horrible play and lack of a work ethic had painted an unflattering picture of him before this article.
