NBA Playoffs: 7 Games reasonable?

7 games just seems like way too many. Considering that the NCAA tourney is only one game per team, the NBA seems to be on the other extreme. Players get benched later in the season because of the drawn out playoff process and this therefore devalues the regular season. The playoffs are too damn grueling!

There has to be some sort of statistical analysis out there that says a team that can win 3 of 5 or even 2 of 3 is a good indicator of the better team and that winning 4 of 7 is only incrementally better (diminishing return in determining series winner). Any thoughts?

Bring back the best of five format for the first 2 rounds and actually play games on consecutive days.

ETA: Won't happen due to $$$

I'd definitely be in favor of making the first round best of 3, the next 2 best of 5, and the finals best of 7. And I'd definitely be in favor of shrinking the NCAA tourney to 24-32 teams and playing best of 3 series. None of it would ever happen though.

First round should be 5. Leave every other round at 7.

I don't know, man. Having gone through this bullshite since the Pistons were fighting Celts/Lakers/MJ in the late 80's and early '90's, 7 just feels right. I know there have been some fluke 3 out of 5s. The shite seems like it is only getting started in game 5. Maybe that would change in 3 out of 5. I do know that if my team won 100 plus games in baseball and got punked in 3 out of 5, I would be irate. They can't shave off two fricking grapfruit/cactus games?!

If Baseball can do it in 5, Basketball should be able to

That could happen in worse way than best of 3 in MLB now with the new wild card format. Imagine if the 93 Giants that won 102 had to play a wild card play in game against some 83 win team and lost. That beats what happened to them in 1993, but it would still suck.

I use the exact opposite logic. If basketball takes 7, baseball should definitely take 7.

Is this true? I mean, is there consensus that the current format is optimal for generating profit?

If you shorten the regular season and make the playoff series games shorter, you make each game more meaningful. Who wants to see the Spurs sit their starting 5 during the regular season? Isn't it possible that the cumulative viewership of a 5 game series is greater than the cumulative of a 7? Each game would mean so much more. I just don't care as much when there are 7 games. I can stand to miss a game.or two. I think I would be more attuned if there were less games

Exactly. And take medtiger's example. Ridiculous, though I will say the playoff push is fun.

I think the "randomness" of baseball and the emphasis of having a deep bullpen (and not just one ace pitcher) deserves a higher number of games to allow the cream to rise. not a perfect process but more games the better.

I don't feel that way about basketball or football. More often than not the better team will win over and over again.

And the NBA playoff is infinitely a better tournament to truly decide who the best team is.

They sit to rest, it has nothing to do with how long the playoffs are. NFL players sit at the end of the regular season too, and some teams only have to play 3 playoff games, max.

Is it true that they won't shorten the season or playoffs due to money? Uhh yes lol.

0% possible.

The purpose is to determine a champion, not who the best team is. If the goal were to determine the "best", you wouls just have a round robin.

They should do something crazy like the first two rounds can be won 3-0 but if it isn't 3-0 you must win 4. You'd get some crazy game 3s when someone is up 2-0. Mainly because it is pretty rare a team up 3-0 goes on to lose. But if they lose game 4 and even 5 and close it out before 7 they've played a couple extra early round games that just stretches the playoffs out. Make it a little reward for getting up 3-0.

the goal should be to have these 2 be one in the same or to strive to come close as you feasibly can to this.

I get that it's not always possible, like in the NFL, you can't have 3 or 5 game series, so in a 1 game scenario, things happen.
