Three-time LHSAA state championship coach Jess Curtis is moving on to a position in South Louisiana, a spokesman at the school confirmed to the USA Today Network Thursday afternoon.

The Natchitoches Central football coach, who won his state titles over nine seasons in Many is departing the NCHS after just one season with a 2-8 record, including 1-6 in District 1-5A. He’ll take over at Southside High School in Youngsville outside of Lafayette. The Sharks compete in one of the toughest 5A districts in the state contending with Acadiana, Carencro, Sam Houston, Barbe, Sulphur, New Iberia, Lafayette and Comeaux for a football title.

Curtis inherits a program that went 10-2 and won the District 3-5A title in 2022 then finished 8-4 last season advancing to the second round of the LHSAA Non-Select Division I playoffs.

Natchitoches Central has always been a black hole of a football program. I’ve never understood why they never have any success.

It appears it took Jess Curtis one season to learn it was a dead end job.

They were #1 half the year in 95 and beat the dog out of WM in the regular season before losing in the 2nd round in 96. Other than those 2 years, yeah not good at all.

Good hire for Southside. Epic battles with Carencro and Acadiana loom ahead

They actually played much better this year even though the record does not show it. Except for 2-3 games, they had a chance to win the others. They were trying to get over that hump of learning how to win rather than trying not to lose.

From what I understand, the kids are working hard for next year. It will be interesting to see who they hire next and if that coach can keep the heightened interest up for the program.

I hate it for the kids, they got hyped up and then dropped. The dude tried to get 2 other jobs before coaching his first game there and then bails after a year.

......and still doesn't have their own football stadium, in what most people would say is the nicest school in the Acadiana region, that is also overcrowded.

He will win a bunch there. Probably not Carencro or Acadiana, but he could run through the rest of them like NISH and Lafayette, Sulphur and such.

Didn’t they just allocate 3.3 mill for a new stadium?
