Dick Trickle. Maybe not the best driver but the name has a certain ooze to it.

It’s pretty much between Petty and Earnhardt but Petty gets the tie breaker because of the wins total.

200 to 76 just can’t be ignored.

Gordon was better than Dale but that damn chase screwed him. Much as the BCS and playoffs helped Saban, so did the chase's creation help JJ and screw Gordon. Gordon should have had at least two more titles.

In the sports world people focus too often on what didn’t happen instead of what did happen

Agree with this take. Not a Gordon fan at all during his racing career but have come to appreciate his greatness in the years after. Using the same system as Dale, in a more competitive era(rules alone much less talent) he would have more wins and titles than Dale. That can only lead you to conclude Gordon was better. Then we have Jimmie Johnson. Modern, chase era, no one will likely ever be better than JJ. He and Knauss had that shite down.

I was the biggest #3 fan there could be. I always wonder what Dale's career would have looked like if we'd not have lost Davey Allison and Tim Richmond.

It helped that the way the chase was set up, if a guy had a DNF through no fault of his own or car at some point in the chase, he was knocked out. Amazing how many times Gordon was up near the top when the chase started and then boom! a wreck would destroy his chances.

The chase is one of the reasons I quit watching NASCAR.

Was an Earnhardt fan, but the best Nascar driver ever was David Pearson.

Pearson only ran more than 85% of the races 4 times. And won three championships in those 4 years.

Petty regularly ran nearly all the races during his career. And there were 50-60 races per year in the 60s. Few teams ran the full schedule then as they did not have the factory backing the Petty's did.

When Pearson retired from racing a "full" schedule, he had more championships than Petty while starting racing Nascar a year later.

Richard Petty is the most accomplished Nascar driver of all time, with the most accolades.

While Dale Earnheart at his peak, is the greatest Nascar Driver of all time.

It’s similar to a Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus debate for me. Nicklaus is the most accomplished golfer ever, but Tiger at his peak, is the best golfer who ever lived.

Petty won 200 races in his career, which is incredible, but here’s the kicker in my argument and why I place Earnheart ahead of Petty.

Richard Petty and Dale Earnheart raced against each other 415 times in their careers. Dale Earnheart placed higher than Petty did in 274 of the 415 times they raced against each other.

274 times Earnheart finished ahead of Petty, compared to Petty finishing ahead of Earnheart 141 times. That’s a vast difference, and why Earnheart is ahead of Petty for me.

Pearson went to the Wood Brothers, who only ran the big money races, at the big tracks.
Pearson and Petty had more 1-2 finishes than any two drivers in NASCAR history.

Earnhardt was a better driver than Petty, but this is a silly way to try and show it as Petty was on the downslope of his career when they overlapped.

He, and Waltrip, overstayed their sell by date by quite a lot.

Speaking of Waltrip, he gets lost in these threads. He was a legit great driver, and a master on short tracks.

Not knocking anyone else, but Petty did it all, and did it first.

Petty raced multiple times per week and had backing that no one else did at the time.

Not saying he wasn't a great driver, but that's how you get 200 wins.

Jimmie had a lot of advantages too, mainly the fact that the terrible chase format was invented and most of the tracks in the chase favored him. His titles are definitely not the same as Petty's and Dale's.

Davey Allison could have been the best of all time had he lived.

4. Jeff Gordon
5. Cale Yarborough

(I would have Jimmie Johnson at #6.)

Thats a good list.

The reality is that you can move a lot of guys around and not be "wrong" necessarily. I'd probably swap Pearson and Petty.

Theres just so many considerations to make since the cars and rules (and even the tracks) have drastically changed over the years.
