+1 That happens all the time.
Really? An over-the-shoulder catch 485 feet from home plate?

I think centerfield in the Polo Grounds was like 470 feet or something like that.
515. No batted ball ever hit the centerfield wall, and the bullpens were in play.

the layup by Jordan where he switches hands for no reason.
It would have been overrated had they awarded him 3 points for it.

As I mentioned earlier, think of how many home runs Mays could have hit if he played at Fenway. How long did he play at the Polo Grounds?

It was 483 ft. You can see the 483 sign on the left in this picture of the Catch.

the selling of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees

sure it was a colossial mistake, but the curse of the bambino is the dumbest shite i've ever heard

yanks ruled because of good development and raiding franchises like the royals and A's for top players

sawx sucked because of racist ownership and a shitty front office

"The Catch", a significant but overrated play IMHO, cannot compare to the Immaculate Reception.

The IR matches or surpasses it in every historical aspect, and in football terms was far more dramatic.

I think Mays got called up in '50 or '51 and the Giants moved to San Fran in '58? (I'm too lazy to google this right now). But it's not like Candlestick was that much better than the Polo Grounds.

And as a former average high school outfielder, I think that catch and throw deserves every bit of the recognition it gets. That play was absolutely incredible.

Mays played shallow b/c it allowed him to take away hits and he was so freakishly gifted that he could make up for playing shallow on balls hit deep. Andruw Jones did the same thing in his prime.

Nice find. Thats a long fricking way. Can you imagine chasing one down in that bullpen area and tossing it 350 feet back to second base?

I agree with all of this. The best all round player ever to IMO.

Disagree. The Steelers didn't even make the SB the year of the IR. The catch was the literal and symbolic passing of the torch from the NFC's team of the 70's to the team that would dominate the 80's.

And the IR was the end of the Steelers as 40 year doormats and the beginning of the Steel Curtain.

And it was FAR greater as a football play.

Doug Flutie's TD against the worst Miami team of tha era.

Whoopie! A 9-3 team beat an 8-4 team (or something like that), not a play for the ages other than he was already a media darling and that cinched it.

Bill Buckner's missed grounder.

Albert Pujols' home run off of Lidge in the '05 NLCS that prolonged the series by one whole game.

I don't think anybody rates the significance of that play highly, it's just that he absolutely murdered that ball. One of the hardest hit baseballs I have ever seen.

in 1960s and 90s yes, but the trading of Babe Ruth was hardly over rated-

Red Sox World Series titles 1915,1916,& 1918

Babe Ruth is then traded to the Yankees and they go to the World Series in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1926 1927, 1928, & 1932.
