The owners have apparently run the numbers and figured paying prorated salaries has them losing more money and not having a season and laying off workers.

So in reality the fans and players lose out, the owners know they will be losing money and no one goes into business to lose money, so they are trying to make it were they lose less. If there is no season at all it hurts younger players, older players, those chasing records, and those future contracts.

The casual fan will be lost, some die hard fans will not come back because of greed on both sides and revenue will drop. This will impact future salaries and future negotiations. All in all everyone will eventually lose.

a sliding scale makes sense generally for how to structure pay cuts when necessary. the problem is, baseball players were already forgoing ~50% of their salaries this season. LINK

This is likely one of the few times that a stoppage due to differences in finances would not hurt the MLB that much.

Most of us have grown accustomed to no baseball so far and the season never got started anyway, so while they will lose some fans, I see most just picking back up next year.

I would imagine there’s a good possibility that if this happens, ESPN will lowball their bid for the MLB rights the next time around (MLB/ESPN agreement ends in 2021), and then baseball is on their way to becoming hockey.

dont see why the players are getting so mad, why should they get 100% pay for 50% work. Prorating the pay for half the games make sense. If they dont want to pay for then dont play and dont get paid.

If the NHL, NBA, and NFL come back and MLB does not because of greedy owners and players, it more than likely will.

You already have the KBO and Japanese leagues either back or about to start back up.

Billionaires and millionaires arguing over who owes who money. Neither wins.

Stay at the table until a deal is reached.

The first offer of a negotiation will always be laughable.

I think the who pays who relationship is firmly established. I don't think anyone is arguing that the players should be paying the owners.

bullshite. MLB is by far my favorite sport. I buy MLB Extra Innings. I go to games. I buy shite loads of team shirts, hats, etc. If they can't settle this I'm done with MLB. I'll spend my money and time elsewhere.

I would give anything to be able to play. I’d play for $10 a game. I’m so fricking sick of these players acting as if they’re paid in fricking peanuts.

Yeah right.

I'm sure you are also willing to do your current job for 50% less pay.

Everyone in any job wants to be paid the max they can get, it's not any different just because it's a sizable amount of money.

Scores of MLB players held a call today and were said “pretty galvanized,” in their disdain for MLB’s economic offer (reax ranged from “disappointing” to “disrespectful”); suggestion heard it doesn’t even warrant counter proposal. Some see as “part of process” but time is short.

So typical of the modern day MLB to pass on an opportunity and further alienate casual fans.

They could have potentially had a golden opportunity to absolutely monopolize TV with the entire country sitting at home craving sports, and they would've done insane ratings and potentially even rebuilt a semblance of a casual fan base. Hell, my wife doesn't even like baseball and even she was hoping there would be baseball to watch and follow.

But in typical MLB fashion, they shite the bed and piss away a golden opportunity.

Because making 50% of 60,000 is the same as 50% of 20,000,000....

I mean, a guy making even only 1% of 20,000,000 is still raking in more than like 95% of the population .... hitting a ball with a bat.

Right or wrong, there’s not going to be much public sympathy. Max Scherzer or anyone else thinking there will be is just fooling themselves.

Fight for your 10s of millions instead of millions, fine. But don’t expect the average American to show sympathy to your cause.
