Beyond their well-known interest in some Marlins targets, the Cards are also chatting internally about the possibility of going after free agent Carlos Gonzalez, who will surely be available for less (in terms of contract amount assumed and prospect capital) than would the others.
Now this makes perfect sense and fits the mold, sign the washed up old guy cheaper option.

Think the Padres wish they had Kluber back?
Imagine the prospects AJ Preller could refuse for him.

I heard someone mention Gonzalez, but he had a negative WAR last year and has been hurt a lot.

Remember when we almost traded for him a few years back? Wouldn't surprise me at all if they signed him. I thought he was old, but 32 really isn't that old. I was thinking he was 34 or 35.
How big of an upgrade is he really over Grichuk or Piscotty? Eh..

Yeah, I was hoping to get Gonzalez back in winter of 2014, but Heyward was traded for instead. I’d rather have him over Grichuk if he can stay healthy, but that’s a big if.

Michael Kay said yesterday on radio he's hearing Judge is going to win MVP.
I'm torn bc I really need Altuve to win

I sorta think the exact opposite
But maybe you're right. LINK

I don't have much faith in the baseball writers to not have big sparkly eyes over home runs and New York.

I'm just interested to see if either of the Cleveland voters don't have Judge/Altuve 1-2 on their ballot

Judge had a higher OBP, slugging, and scored more runs than Altuve. He had better park-adjusted numbers than Altuve. A better defender according to the metrics. He had a higher WAR than Altuve, according to Fangraphs. More weighted runs created.
Judge led the league in homers, walks, runs, 2nd in RBI

I don't think either choice is wrong... but I'm hoping Altuve wins it.

Will be interesting to see what weighs more important to the voters

Yeah as an Astros fan I am fine with Judge winning it. His end year numbers were better even if the production was inconsistent, and he put those numbers up with worse hitters around him than Altuve had. I hope Altuve wins just because this might be his best chance but can’t be mad if he finishes second
Overall I think this MVP race has been really good for MLB. Two unique marketable players on really good teams who had incredible years. It’s been the most talked about MVP race in a while that I can remember

For those that are saying Judge will win simply because the media "loves New York"......

yep
I was going to post all of it myself, but remember you saying it so I went with the ole copy and paste

Yeah, the thing is that the numbers in Altuve's column are heavily in his favor, whereas most of Judge's column is a lot closer. Except HR and BB, pretty clear advantage Judge there.

i get the case for altuve for mvp and it wouldnt bother me if he won, i just also get the case for judge and i personally think its a better one
