Paul Goldschmidt deal is what they would base his contract around which was 5 years 130m. They probably agree on something like 5 years 150m with a team option for a 6th year

Eduardo Rodriguez to Detroit. 5/77

Every prediction I saw had him going back to Boston. Will be really interesting to see what they do now

The deal also contains a no-trade clause, reports Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press (Twitter links). Petzold adds that the contract contains $3MM in possible incentives.

7:52 am: It’s a $77MM guarantee, according to Heyman, who adds that Rodríguez will have the option to opt out after 2023. The deal also contains additional incentives.

7:48 am: The contract also contains at least one opt-out clause, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter link). Jeff Passan of ESPN reports the deal’s total guarantee landing between $77MM and $80MM.

He is fairly young for a free agent. He’s stuff has never been in question. His advanced numbers were really good last year. 3.32 FIP. 3.55 xERA. Nearly 4 fWAR. Among starters with 150+ innings last year, he was 15th in K%-BB%

It’s not a steal, but doesn’t seem like a crazy overpay either.

I don't understand why any team would sign anyone to a one year contract. Every baseball analyst everywhere is one hundred percent certain there is going to be a work stoppage next year.

Blue Jays have signed an extension with star right-hander Jose Berrios, covering the 2022-2028 seasons, pending a physical. He will be guaranteed $131MM over the length of the deal.

Craig Counsell finished second in voting after leading the Milwaukee Brewers to the NL Central title. Mike Shildt was third -- a month after he was fired over what St. Louis Cardinals

Berries deal is absurd. Dude at best a #3 and will probably be in decline for at least half the contract

Detroit seems to think their window to compete begins in 2022. They’ve added Barnhart and now Rodriguez. That rotation is taking form with Rodriguez, Mize, Skubal, and Manning too. Torkelson and Riley Greene may contribute next year as well.

They have a nice young club, I think they grab one of the big FA SS and sign Verlander as well

Berrios has pretty much pitched like a #2 his whole career. The dude is 27 and the deal takes him to 34 so it isn't a bad deal for someone who will give you innings and post a sub 4 ERA
