Watching Garrett Gilbert start for the WFT last week I thought, if during the 2009 BCS national championship game, after Colt McCoy went down and GG came in and played well, you would have gotten a glimpse into the future and GG was starting for an NFL team in 2021, you’d have made very incorrect assumptions about how things would play out.

Any other good ones?

ETA: admittedly a harder concept to convey than I intended. Lol

I think I sorta get what you’re asking.

A different one (also involving a QB, and Alabama) would be saying in January 2017 that Jalen Hurts would eventually be a Heisman finalist. No one would be surprised. The path to get there (via losing his job at Bama and then becoming a finalist after transferring to OU) would have been surprising.

That’s a good one.

Another one would be on Draft Day 2003, LeBron James would win an NBA Championship for the Cavaliers. The presumption if someone heard that would be he’d spend his entire career in Cleveland or at least win one there before leaving Cleveland, not he’d go somewhere else in free agency to win a championship first, be despised by the city and then return to win one.

If I told you in November of 2016 that ed orgeron would be fired by 2021 you'd probably assume lsu wallowed in mediocrity for years.

Now if I told you both he and herman would be fired by that point, but one of them would win a title, you'd probably think it played out a lot different than it did

If I had told you back in the early 1980s that Craig James killed five hookers and OJ Simpson killed his wife and lover and both ultimately got away with it, and only one was regarded unfavorably in public opinion, I bet you would guess the wrong one.

That Steph Curry in the 2009 draft would end up being the GOAT along with Tom Brady.

I might actually think O won the natty. He's more likely to get fired for cause.

So how would that make you think something other than what happened in between was what happened.

Garrett Gilbert was a true freshman with virtually zero previous playing time thrown into the fire against a historically great Alabama D. Why would people assume he would have zero future at QB based on that performance? Mac Jones looked like complete trash when he had to come in cold off the bench against Tennessee when Tua got hurt. Dumb to write off any QB based on one performance coming off the bench.

You’re misunderstanding the thread’s premise (which was a bit confusing in the OP).

Hester was asking about events where, based on event A, event C is able to (correctly) be predicted at the time of event A. But it occurs after event(s) B unexpectedly/unconventionally occur.

So Gilbert being an NFL starter in 2021 (event C) could’ve been predicted correctly based on his Alabama game (event A). But event C would’ve been/is extremely weird based on event(s) B (transferring to SMU, not starting an NFL game until 2020).

When Joe Burrow commits to play for Ohio State, you learn that before his college career is done, he wins the Heisman Trophy and a national championship after an undefeated season that shattered passing records and would be recognized by many as one of the greatest teams ever to play the game.
