LINK
This link explains it a little more in depth. Basically there are a few B10 schools who mismanaged money and need a cash infusion to get out of debt. some want security and a longer-term deal to stay in the B10. big schools want unequal rev sharing.
all that being said, frick the Big Ten, Sankey better not do this. can't imagine PE investors are gonna be okay with having olympic sports lose schools millions of dollars as well

Would you rather sell out to private equity or continue having the universities subsidize the athletic departments using the university general fund?
Posted on 11/9/25 at 12:33 pm to Carolina_Tiger
The Alabama AD came out and said the SEC wouldn’t dream about even discussing PE because the PE model doesn’t work with Olympic sports

Ya, I’ve already disproven that. LSU funnels millions into the AD by disguising it as “athletic admin” and “electronic media” revenue. If you break those numbers down by what they submit to the department of education, it’s obvious. Anything earmarked as non-gender on their OP budget is coming from the general fund
Never had >$1mm in athletic admin revenue prior to NIL, now their admin staff is directly bringing in $35 million per year to LSU? Doing what exactly?

The potential ramifications from this GoR deal crosses a line with for a lot of people that have a lot more foresight and experience than random ADs or university presidents.
Yeah....but Universities have been going down this road to destruction for awhile, the tail wagging the dog, sports (specifically CFB) being the new Chancellor of all...lead blindly now and soon to be lead and controlled by outside forces, all for something that has realistically, little to do with the purpose and mandates of Universities... Especially private ones.

USC and Michigan to the PAC 2

Sankey should reach out and see if these schools want to agree now to join the SEC at the end of the B1G’s current GOR.
That would completely tank the value of the B1G’s media rights.
Sign some Big XII and ACC schools to become SEC DII and some Sun Belt and American schools SEC DIII, and the SEC has an effective monopoly on CFB. Leave the remainder of the B1G out in the cold with this private equity nonsense.

You also have to remember that a good percentage of university admin eggheads absolutely abhor collegiate athletics. Anything they could do to hasten sports demise they will support.

Michigan would be in the SEC the next day.

think you're referring to the Northwesterns, Rutgers, Purdue's of the world... think it's obvious they feel as though a super league could happen where they would be left out. They want the security and long-term stability of being in the B10

Neither. I as an accountant would always prefer schools to spend what they make. if you earn 150 million in revenue you should spend up to 150 million. but if you made me pick one or the other, I'd rather the university. lesser of two evils. at least on paper the universities have interest in the athletic departments, PE investors only care about the almighty dollar. Anything that doesn't generate profit they are going to pressure you to cut it i.e. olympic sports

Not entirely sure how a public university could sign off on such a deal. Has to be off-ramps and it’s hard to imagine what that contract is going to look like.
