So does Oher have a claim or not? Did he get royalties? I didn't read the whole thread, just heard about it earlier. Seems like a simple case. Poor Sandra Bullock and her legs have been besmirched

From what I read (admittedly the family's attorney's statement), he received the same royalties as everyone else.

NBC just said "per a source close to the family, they received $700,000 to be split evenly".

If that's the $ amount, would the question be how many Taco Bell franchises could the family buy for that $ amount at the time? And if yes, wouldn't the value for Oher's award be number of franchises x current value of franchises? Plus, whatever a sympathetic court would throw in for punitive damages?

From his own book, from Lewis book, from the Tuohys, by all accounts... No. He had a falling out for a long time and needs $...and most non-biased reports are calling this a sad shakedown.

No

Only if he invested his share of the money into the franchises which i doubt he did

The fact that he didn't have the Touhy's taking his NFL money and buying Taco Bell and KFC franchises is even sadder. I honestly thought this dude would be close to a billion by now with the inside track that he had

ETA: And if my family would have been asking me for money I would have just set them up with a Taco Bell job with profit sharing incentives

Oher is contending he didn’t get anything. The news report suggested the family got $700,000.

If the family used his share to buy a franchise(s), shouldn’t he be entitled to the value of a franchise(s) at its current value? We can’t assume Oher would have invested. but if he thought ST was looking out for Oher’s $$$ interests at the time, I can see why he is upset and /or thinks he has a case.

I also assume family wasn’t worth hundreds of millions back then and may have used those funds to grow their empire.

I have no idea like most on the board. Just thinking out loud here.

The source says he was in on the split brotato chip. Your nbc source you are using is calling Oher a liar

This estimate is similar to NBC News' reporting. A source close to the Tuohys tells NBC News, the Tuohys have received approximately $700,000 total in rights, payments and profits, which was intended to be divided between the family members — Sean, Leigh Anne, their two biological children and Oher.

The source says all of that was split five ways with Oher

They owned roughly 50 fast food franchises at the time. They were already rich as frick

The family has the documentation showing that was split equally unless they are lying

I believe several articles stated there were some royalties received that Oher declined when offered by the Touhys, so they created a trust for his son and put the funds in the trust. I'm sure that can be documented as well and I don't recall if an amount was mentioned, but for the Touhys, these are pretty small sums of money.

He’s clearly an idiot that didn’t take advantage of the gift he was given.

It’s weird to me that he is making a big deal now about officially being “adopted” yet he never wanted to change his last name?

The headlines trying to make it seem like family took “advantage” of him but really they only seemed to help him and now he’s doing everything he can to bring them down or profit from their success post his own football career and book deal

Oher had 4 kids & a common law wife. This should probably have ended years ago. He is a self made man & Athletic prodigy( All State Bball & Top 5 OL prospect) & only moved in with this family at age 18 in the summer of 2004 before his Sr. Year of HS. You'd believe the Tuohys moved Oher in , taught him how to tie his shoes , play Football & got him to where he was in life. I understand his resentment, but his anger may be somewhat misquided.

Not unusual for wealthy sports crazed boosters to prey upon impressionable young athletes, but I think the Tuohys may have genuinely been sympathetic to his situation. Just a nice bonus if he feels like " family" & chooses the family's Alma mater.

One crucial part of the attorney's statement is referencing being approached by other attorneys who stopped representing Oher when given the documentation. We have to judge the veracity somewhat, but if that's anything close to true, that's real bad for Oher's claims.

Based on information known, I think Oher's lawyer is going to regret having taken this on. I don't believe, for a minute, the Touhys will offer any type of settlement to make it go away. They can afford to defend themselves and unless there's some dark secret out there not known to the public, they are not going to give him any money.

I'm interested in reading the Touhy's answer to the lawsuit. They might move for a summary judgment early on.

Pride, I didn't mean to sound informative. And I'm not arguing with you. Just relaying the morning news on NBC (which I loathe but my wife likes the Today show)

You seem really informed or connected to them in some way. Sometimes, even with good income, owning a bunch of franchises can also mean "leveraged" AF, too.

But with just page 23 of this thread and what I'm reading, if it "Walks like a duck, and Quacks like a Duck', then yes, this appears to be a poorly run shakedown of Jackie Chiles proportions.
