Byron Russell was pretty cocky himself, with no reason to be

he was regarded as pretty big douche around the league

well maybe that's the reason for it.

ETA: It still did surprise me that MJ still seems to have a chip on his shoulder. That's kind of cool.

Jordan gambles, goes pro in baseball and gets into HOF. Pete Rose gambles, banned for life.

Pete Rose gambled on HIS team while managing. Then lied about it.
Jordans a gambler and has never denied it.

I think he was alluding to the accusation that Jordan was suspended for allegedly gambling on NBA games. That's the theory.

Jordan seemed pretty insecure to me, like he was trying to convince everyone that he was awesome. We know. He's Michael Jordan. But, it was like he didn't want people to forget.

Honestly, that was probably one of the worst acceptance speeches I've ever heard. It just struck a bad tone, like he was out to prove something. It made him look small and was beneath his accomplishments, in my opinion.

Jordan acted like no one knew who he was and what he accomplished. He wanted everyone to know he was greatest, guess he is getting jealous of Kobe and Lebron.

I didn't get that impression from his speech at all. He actually had some pretty humble quotes in his media interview prior to the ceremony, at least compared to his speech

His speech, I was just in shock. I mean it sounded like something I expect from Rickey Henderson not Michael Jordan.

i thought the speech was odd since he and nike have spent his entire public career keeping a lid on his personality and ego.

It was refreshing to see him actually be himself. That was him though, or as close as we've ever gotten to see him. I just have the feeling and know for a fact that he burned a lot of positive pr capital with that speech. I'm pretty certain the Nike reps are going to put him back into politic mode right away.

a few more interviews like that and he'll go tom cruise on us. It's funny when you actually hear these people that you idolize speak their mind for the first time. And then you wish they hadn't.

I know, I know. I mean the people who offer the PR advice. Barak Obama runs the country, but he has people write speeches for him and control his image.

No doubt they are people running damage control right now.

I can not believe he even mentioned his HS coach and made the comment he made a mistake. Who knew 30-40 years later Jordan is still bitter.

I think he felt like he needed to talk about his life and what made him the player he was. He was talking about the things that drove him to be the best player that he possibly could. His brothers, losing out on his spot on the varsity squad in high school, Magic, Bird, people like Pat Riley having "Jordan stoppers", etc. There was a reason behind his rambling. He was definitely arrogant though

exactly. he said he had so many people to thank. did he?

i didn't hear him thank his teammates, other than Scottie. I didn't hear him thank Tim Grover. I didn't hear him thank the Bulls organization, other than to say that players win, organizations don't.

He didn't thank Nike, or Spike Lee for making him a superduperstar. Didn't mention the Dream Team, or his dreamteammates that made him even bigger worldwide.

it was a weird speech at best.

he made a lot of jokes in jest

plus those stories relate to us common people, since they have been etched in our mind for the last 20 years.
