I think he felt like he needed to talk about his life and what made him the player he was

Anyone who is older than 5 knows the player he was, he was the greatest of all-time. He didn't need to diss his HS coach who we all know made a mistake. He didn't need to discuss Russell/Van Gundy there was no point to it. It sounded like he was trying to prove to people he is still the greatest.

This comment bothered me too, it seemed totally pointless,
quote:

When he finally acknowledged his family, Jordan blurted, in part, to them, “I wouldn’t want to be you guys.”

I just read this article 2 minutes ago:

it was just a weird, rambling speech. I watched it twice.

The ESPN articles on his speech glossed over everything. No mention of any hint of arrogance or taking shots at people in the audience. They called the speech "just as charismatic as his play on the court was"

I am amazed....You people are reading way too far into it. He wasn't trying to say "look what I did"...he finally let his guard down and tried to share what drove him to greatness and how he challenged himself. At the begenning of his speech, he mentioned how he learned something that he did not know about the other inductees. He asked "what can I tell you that you don't already know about me". He then explained his competitive nature and what drove him to succeed. He publically acknowledged some things for the first time that people have been begging him to discuss for years. Now that he finally does, some geeks behind a computer want to bash him for being honest. Could you not tell that his emotions were not genuine? Do you really think that he wasn't greatful? The only part of that speech that was planned was the last few lines, when he gave another brilliant MJ quote: "limits, like fears, are often just an illusion". Everything else seemed to be on the fly and genuine. It was interesting to hear how he had to a create competition inside competition. I for one am greatful that I got a look into the thought process and inspiration of the greatest competitor of my lifetime. Writers are going to write because that is what they are suppose to do. Don't be a puppet. Look at the big picture. He refused to call himself the greatest player ever although he clearly is. He was just overwhelmed with emotion and spoke from the heart on a speech that wasn't all planned out. What more do you want?

Jordan seemed pretty insecure to me, like he was trying to convince everyone that he was awesome. We know. He's Michael Jordan. But, it was like he didn't want people to forget.

Honestly, that was probably one of the worst acceptance speeches I've ever heard. It just struck a bad tone, like he was out to prove something. It made him look small and was beneath his accomplishments, in my opinion.
+1

Just watched the speech. No question Jordan was the best ever but now he shows he is also the biggest douche. History and competition are aspects of defining a players legacy among all time greats and Jordan shite on both. Compare this to how Tiger Woods (who may be the best golfer ever) reveres the history of his game.

I was embarrassed for Jordan because he came off as bitter and still holding a grudge. People almost forgot the blemish he put on his career from his stupid comeback but now this is a permanent blemish that won't be forgotten.
