Mavericks in danger of forfeiting games due to injury and salary cap rules

It's an incredibly complicated situation involving both the team's shorthanded roster due to injuries and the league's salary cap rules. Marks breaks it all down, but in essence, the date to look at is Monday, March 24 at the Brooklyn Nets where the Mavs could find themselves in position to be forced to forfeit a game.
The first issue at hand is the team losing players due to injury.
Kyrie Irving (torn ACL), Olivier Maxence-Prosper (right wrist injury) and Dante Exum (fractured left hand) are out for the year.
quote:
Dallas provided a March 7 update on Anthony Davis (left adductor strain), Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture) and Daniel Gafford (right knee sprain), stating that all three are improving. However, there is no concrete timetable on any of their returns.
Jaden Hardy (right ankle sprain) and Kai Jones (quad) haven't played since March 3. P.J. Washington (right ankle sprain) has been out since March 1.
However, Jones and Washington were both questionable for the team's Friday injury report prior to a 133-96 loss at the Houston Rockers, leaving hope that they could return soon.
But for now, it leaves Brandon Williams, Dwight Powell, Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, Caleb Martin, Max Christie, Spencer Dinwiddie and Kessler Edwards as the lone healthy players (eight total).

That's where the second issue comes into play: The Mavs don't have any flexibility to sign more players. They are just under the first apron hard cap by $51,000. In essence, that means they can't bring anyone else in from the outside.
Per Marks, last offseason's Thompson sign-and-trade and the Marshall signing "triggered the first apron hard cap."
Henceforth, the Dallas Mavericks aren't allowed to exceed the first apron under any circumstances.
quote:
Of course, it can be avoided, as Washington and Jones (who can play the rest of Dallas' season) can return before the Nets game.

Can’t they bring up G league players?

The terms for the NBA salary cap nuances don’t sound like actual proper English sometimes

What a clusterfrick of a franchise

Seems to be the mantra of the season… “At least we aren’t Dallas.”
Arguably the only team whose season was shittier, long term, was Philly.
As bad as our season is, at least we have the chance to either reload or totally rebuild this offseason depending on the lottery. Dallas doesn’t even have that.

They are the reigning Western Conference Champions…
… and a great lesson in how just a couple of missteps can completely derail a franchise with quickness.

The GM & Owners could not have intentionally pulled of the collapse of this franchise any worse than what they have already done. It is a 5-10 year rebuild at a minimum. It is truly amazing what this trade & its aftermath has done to the team, the fans, & the franchise. Fire Nico. Now.
I think this goes much deeper than Nico & Rob Pelinka pulling off the worst trade in NBA history. The League had to be involved in an effort to help the Lakers. I would love for the NBA to be investigated to see if they had anything to do with this trade. Of course it won't & nothing will happen.

Every day that goes by without this happening is further proof this was ownership driven and he’s just a patsy.

Silver should’ve vetoed that trade, man

For sure. They didn’t want to spend the money.

Have you heard the owner speak? I think that guy and Nico are legit slow…..they are responsible for the worst trade in sports history.

At this point, front office management may be assaulted should they ever show themselves in public in Dallas.

I don’t usually condone violence but those dudes deserve it.

Should be awarded a win to not help their tank

They keep bringing this up, but literally today they played 8 people in the game. It’s just fake news
