ESPN

quote:

Several current University of Maryland football players and people close to the Terrapins program describe a toxic coaching culture under head coach D.J. Durkin before offensive lineman Jordan McNair's death in June after a football workout.

quote:

There is a coaching environment based on fear and intimidation. In one example, a player holding a meal while in a meeting had the meal slapped out of his hands in front of the team. At other times, small weights and other objects were thrown in the direction of players when Court was angry.

The belittling, humiliation and embarrassment of players is common. In one example, a player whom coaches wanted to lose weight was forced to eat candy bars as he was made to watch teammates working out.

Extreme verbal abuse of players occurs often. Players are routinely the targets of obscenity-laced epithets meant to mock their masculinity when they are unable to complete a workout or weight lift, for example. One player was belittled verbally after passing out during a drill.

Coaches have endorsed unhealthy eating habits and used food punitively; for example, a player said he was forced to overeat or eat to the point of vomiting.

quote:

A former Maryland staff member said: "I would never, ever, ever allow my child to be coached there."

quote:

"We had a kid die. ... It took all summer for us to even get a third-party investigation to meet with, and the timing [of those interviews] is absolutely horrendous," the player said. "This is a huge problem at Maryland."

Does DUrkin survive this?

Was wondering when this story would make it on here. Definitely looks bad but I'm waiting to see everything the investigation releases

Holy crap! That sounds like something a football coach would do! This guy needs to learn the Maryland way or he’s gone.

An Auburn had a player transfer here and he was known to be soft...I bet he had a heck of a summer

In all seriousness, whatever this investigation shows, action must be taken if true

Some of it (profanity and questioning masculinity) is stuff I remember and is pretty regular.

Throwing weights at players and forcefeeding until they vomit, that's a little extreme.

I played football and basketball and screaming and cursing happens. Maybe even a little physical contact, but chucking a weight plate (if true) gets too far out for me.

Reportedly letting a player die from heat exhaustion is probably a little overboard as well

If Kevin Plank decides any looming scandal involving UM athletics isn’t worth it, Durkin will be gone with the quickness.

But multiple witnesses at the workout told ESPN that McNair had physical difficulty before the workout ended and needed two teammates to help him complete the 10th sprint.

"There's no way he finished on his own," one of the players at the workout told ESPN.

"There were multiple people that said, 'Wow, Jordan looks f---ed up, he doesn't look all right,'" the player said. "We knew he was really exhausted, but we didn't know he was in danger of his life. But that doesn't mean that a medical professional shouldn't know to put him in an ice tub."

Multiple sources said that after the 10th sprint finished, Wes Robinson, Maryland's longtime head football trainer, yelled, "Drag his arse across the field!"

A second player at the workout told ESPN: "Jordan was obviously not in control of his body. He was flopping all around. There were two trainers on either side of him bearing a lot of weight. They interlocked their legs with his in order to keep him standing."

I don’t even see how some of this stuff would be perceived as effective. And there is no way he survives. He will be fired before the season starts IMO. This is a pretty easy decision. It’s not like he’s winning or been there for very long.

Dang and didn’t Canada just go there?

Maybe he can get that heading coaching job he always wanted? (Doubtful)

Holy ****, I skimmed and missed that part. That is overboard. The other stuff makes it harder to see that as an accident.

I’m sure it would go to their DC guy.

I’m just thinking short term if the HC was removed.
