i am trying to think of a modern physical comp for Pete and I am having a hard time. Reggie Miller comes the closest but he was 6'7

Pete was also good at penetrating a defense, no area of the court was out of his range plus he could pass with the best of them. I truly believe that, along with Dr. J, Pete was integral to creating tons of basketball fans in the 70s and commercializing the game for the future, they set the table for the years thereafter metaphorically.

Not only that, Dr. J almost played for the Knicks after the merger but the Knicks were stubborn in not waiving the Nets’ territorial fee and wouldn’t agree to take his contract, probably cost the Knicks a title or two methinks

This isn't revisionist history. Pistol was viewed more as a showman/ " Gunner" even during his era. Teams never won anything of note in College or NBA.

LSu wasn't very good before or after he got here.

Well they were downright terrible before.

Hell we didn't even have black players until after Maravich was gone.

I'm not attacking Pete just stating the fact that his teams were never really competitive & it was pointed out during his era.

There were only about 2 Black players in the entire SEC during Pete's era so that's irrelevant.

Nah, not buying it. Pete was ridiculous.

Pistol was an offensive machine but he didn’t play any D at all. He’d be fine in today’s game, his style is most like the Euro players we’ve seen in the NBA.

Russell Westbrook with better three-point shooting?

You say that like it's a bad thing. Russell Westbrook with elite 3 point shooting is one of the best players in the NBA

The 3 point shot would have ruined his game

For his era, Pete’s handle was absolutely incredible. But the training now is so much more knowledgeable and efficient.

This is why these are stupid. If Pete were alive today, he would have access to the current training and nutrition.

This is like saying that Einstein wouldn't be as good as physicists today, because he couldn't operate a computer.

Do you not assume, when you are inserting a player from a previous era, that they would have access to modern training and equipment?

90%

Kyrie probably.

Cousy, Pete, white chocolate, Nash and Kyrie are guys you could legit watch a 5 minute clip of them doing nothing but dribble and pass and still be entertained.

Dr. J

Said playing with Pete was fantastic because Pete would always get you the ball.

Trivia question. Dr. J never played for the only team who actually drafted him. Who was that team?

Maravich and Dr J are the only 2 I think would do better in todays game than in their own day. Ahead of their time, and can you imagine pistol being allowed the extra step, allowed to carry the ball like they do now, and a 3 point line?

Having great handles in the 70s means you could dribble the ball a little bit with your off hand.

Naw man...Marovich would practice his ball handling out the window of his pops car as pop was driving. Go watch Marovich's training videos and appreciate the greatness

I have a feeling the defensive analytics really would have hated Pistol Pete. His play style sounds like present day Trae Young in that he’ll score 40 and give up 50

can you even name one of his teammates that was any good? He was always the star with no supporting cast. And even those resented him for his contract.

Maravich was drafted to a 48-win Hawks team. Five of the Hawks top six leading scorers returned to the team along with the same coach in Maravich's rookie season and their win total dropped by 12 games. How do you explain that?
