New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins said the risk surrounding the coronavirus "has to really be eliminated" before he would be comfortable returning to play this season.

Malcolm I hate the be the one to break this to you but the coronavirus will not be eliminated in your lifetime.

Yeah, and let's just gloss over the rest of the jobs that sports creates - concessions jobs at stadiums, memorabilia shops, restaurants and bars in the area and ones that are filled with fans all over the country to watch on television, broadcast jobs, advertising dollars, cameramen, support staff for that, parking, gasoline for folks traveling to and from games, hotels, etc. etc.

To pretend it's just a game and the consequences of not having are minimal is very obtuse and ignorant.

He must have a lot of money in his account for him to be talking this shite, I’ll never express sympathy for pro players ever again when they whine about contract talks hereafter

He doesn’t want to play, and expects to be paid, he is effectively denying an aspiring NFL player a spot in the league.

That really gets to me, watching these superstars throw their weight around when they make $10M+ a year. In basketball it’s much worse. They pretend like they are sticking up for all players, but in reality the biggest stars could fund an entire league worth of fringe players that are trying to make it

They say the system is broken, but they are gonna get theirs

If Jenkins isn't willing to play and forfeited his money, cool. It's the younger players who are playing for that next contract that matter here, and its borderline irresponsible for Jenkins to talk for them.

The chances are he'll be broke within 5 yrs of leaving the game. Unless he's driving a 10 yr old car and socking all his money away in retirement funds, his expenses dictate he needs this paycheck.

I expected his reasoning to be silly but he actually sounds pretty realistic and humble in that statement, whether you agreed with his premise or not

Football isn't safe, flu isn't safe, banging strippers isn't safe...

What's this world coming to?

As George Carlin said:

"Take a fricking chance in your life.". What's this obsession with guaranteed safety? Take a drive, see the Coast...the drive is 100X more likely to kill you.

Airlines and airline workers, restaurant owners, bar owners, broadcast networks and their employees like cameramen, television and radio advertisers, hotel owners, medical staff, trainers, hospitality staff, security, referees, and on and on...soooo, maybe not all low paying jobs filled with temporary workers. Lot of people affected and a lot of business hurting and closing. Essential is pretty relative, maybe to Jenkins it's not essential. But to others it is....a lot of others.
