So he’ll fit right in with the Texans.

Man, the NFL coaching retread machine is color blind if that guy is hired a 3rd time.

The HS coach would have been the better hire because there would at least be a higher upside

For some reason they really want Josh Mccown but realized there is no way they can hire someone with ZERO coaching experience. So now they can hire Smith and put McCown on the staff then hire him in a couple of years.

Does the Houston owner just not care about football? Is it one of those things that he inherited the team and obviously isn't going to sell a cash cow like that but has no clue in the workings of football or any interest in learning?

Hard to respect someone named after a Gilligan's Island character.

I bet Thurston Howell III could do a better job than Lovie and he’s been dead for 30 years.

Bienemy, Demeco Ryans, Leftwich couldn't land a job over a black retread either.

They’re probably better off not being at Houston right now.

That's probably true. Doesn't change the fact that a black retread was chosen over them. There are other factors at play in a hire other than skin color.

Leftwich passed on Jacksonville due to the GM.

Sounds like he is waiting for a good job rather than take the first thing available.

Hey, I hope he does well but yeah as some have said here - that at least relieves a little bit of pressure from the Saints to hire Bieniemy. I just don't think he's the guy.

I know the NFL is all about re-treads but Lovie went and took a dump on the University of Ill after failing at Chicago. I have a hard time seeing the hire as anything but an attempt to appease, but hey maybe they really like him?

Cal McNair is enthralled with Jack Easterby, a former megachurch youth minister with zero experience as a player or coach, who effectively runs the franchise. Easterby brought in Nick Caserio as GM, and Caserio & Easterby first and foremost want a “Yes Man” at HC. Caserio was even on the headsets with the coaches during games last season.

I think it’s pretty obvious that high-caliber HC candidates are likely staying away from Houston at this time. Not only do you have to deal with Easterby (whose role is kept intentionally ambiguous) & Caserio, but there’s also the Deshaun Watson situation with no resolution in sight.

Bottom line: Texans won’t improve until Cal McNair’s family members help convince him that he’s been duped by Easterby and a new/competent GM is hired and empowered, or, the team is sold.
