Texas at Austin predates all other campuses in that system. It makes sense to call the UT Austin "Texas." It was known that way well before there were any other campuses in the system.

Similarly, the University of California at Berkeley predates by a number of years any other campuses in that system.

Ole Miss uses that name both in academic and athletics. Rarely does anyone call it anything but Ole Miss in any but the most formal of settings.

In context there really isn't any comparison to the Louisiana-Lafayette situation.
