No, they do it because Texas is a much better and easier brand to promote than UT-Austin. It's the reason our school is trying to do it and the reason why LSU is doing all they can to block it.

Please go into detail. B/c that a pretty vague answer you just gave.

I didn't know LSU is STILL trying to do so. UL-Lafayette brought it to the board this year...last year?

Why so ashamed to be from Lafayette? Calling ULL "Lousiana" is confusing to the rest of the country because they think of LSU when they hear Louisiana. And thats why LSU fans hate it. When ULL is getting their asses kicked and it says Louisiana on the ticker, it makes us look bad.

University of Texas at Austin - Texas
University of Mississippi -Ole Miss
University of California, Berkeley - Cal

their "common" academic names are all the same as the athletic names, though

and UT was the first of the system. it is truly the university of texas, with satellite schools in other cities. that's like LSU-S and not ULL (the intrastate satellite designation was basically just made up in the late 90s). UT-A =/= ULL

"Cal" is "Cal". the other UC schools go by their abbreviation (UCLA, UCSB, etc). at worst, it's "Cal-Berkley" (But with my Cali friends, that isn't very popular)

But there is something saying about it having to be state approved to be recognized. Get it approved, problem solved. Until then I don't see a problem with UL-Lafayette

But, you realize, their football team has been called 'Texas' since 1893, right?

I don't care what University of Louisiana (Lafayette, or otherwise) wants to call themselves. That letter was downright goofy, though, if not a bit embarrassing.

this is my opinion

UC-Berkeley calls themselves "Cal" because everybody on earth calls them that and recognizes the name
I'd bet most people call that institution "Berkeley"

And FWIW, I am convinced Brigham Young started calling itself BYU when their sports teams started getting national attention, and they wanted distance from a certain polygamist...

How is it vague? An athletic team branded as "Texas" will undoubtedly garner more attention, sell more shirts than "UT-Austin."

Why do you think ESPN doesn't use the Louisiana name when a lot of schools and stations are doing it now? Because LSU and ULM complains.

They don't really give a shite about the ULM complaint but they give a lot of shits about that SEC contract.
