So you're part of the "rings" argument crew?

No. I'm of the opinion that Bear Bryant took over a decent Bama program and made it the best program in the nation. He coached Bama for 25 years and won the SEC title 13 times. And six national titles (of varying quality). But he essentially won an SEC title every other year. That's amazing. By contrast, Saban has won two SEC titles in six years (though is on pace to win a third in seven)

He also did the hardest thing ever -- he had a lull and bounced back. Most coaches, once they dip, that's it. They don't recover. He had two straight sub-500 seasons in the SEC and then bounced back with five consecutive SEC titles.

He had two losses or less in SEC play 22 of 25 seasons and 1 loss or less NINETEEN TIMES. He went undefeated in the SEC 11 times in 25 years. ELEVEN. (Saban is at 2 of 6)

Oh, he also integrated his team, and SEC football in general. He is pretty much the definition of what a great football coach is. He also was consistently great for 25 years.

I mean, I've met plenty of stupid Bama fans in my life, but I've never met an Alabama fan so stupid that he would deny Bear Bryant. Yes, Bear Bryant was that great.

Okay, so now winning one championship at Texas would make him the greatest ever?

I'm not denying Bear Bryant. I think ranking coaches, players, and teams from different eras is unnecessary. Naming the "GOAT" is overrated and I see no need.

No, but it would give him a unique claim as the only coach to win a national title at three different schools. It would be his unique claim to greatness, and I think that's pretty attractive to a man of Saban's considerable ego.

He already has the unique claim of being the first to do it at 2 schools

Fair enough. Your original post made it seem as though him winning at Texas would make him the GOAT college coach.

Considering Saban and wife's political leanings and Austin being such a nice place I think it would be a fantastic move for him and his family. He would fit in much better there than in Tuscaloosa. Would probably be his last move, huge contract, full control, he'd be in Saban heaven.

FIFY

Wasn't the best outside of the SEC...playing segregated country-club football.

Bryant had an appalling record outside the South in OOC games.

First, take a look at Alabama from 1967 to 1975
From Alabama's Bowl game in 1967 to their season opener in 1975, they played only 12 games against Non-Southern teams.

Bama won only 2 of the 12 games vs Non-Southern teams going 2-9-1.

1967 Texas A&M 7-4 (Lost 20-16)
1968 Missouri 8-3 (Lost 35-10)
1969 Colordado 8-3 (Lost 47-33)
1970 USC 6-4-1 (Lost 42-21)
1970 Oklahoma 7-4-1 (Tie 24-24)
1971 @USC 6-4-1 (Won 17-10)
1971 Nebraska 13-0 (Lost 38-6)
1972 Texas 10-1 (Lost 17-13)
1973 California 4-7 (Won 66-0)
1973 Notre Dame 11-0 (Lost 24-23)
1974 Notre Dame 10-2 (Lost 13-11)
1975 Missouri 6-5 (Lost 20-7)

From 1971 to 1981 Alabama had a marvelous record of
116-15-1 (88%) in 132 games.

But they were
98-5-1 95% (104g) vs Southern teams and
18-10 64% (28g) vs everybody else / Non-Southern teams.

That 116-15-1 would turn into 84-48
if they played non-southern teams and continued to win only 64%.

Would Alabama be just an average .500 team if they had to play schools outside of the south all of the time? It sure looks that way.

Bryant whipped up on crappy segregated Southern football for most of his career. To you young ones...Southern football sucked compared to today...wasn't like today's SEC.

Okay, I'm not going past the first page, but this thread really must make 'Bama fans laugh at our awe of Saban.

Different era. That was the days you were declared champions before the bowl, where multiple teams could be "SEC Champions" in one year, and you could sign many more players to your roster.

IMO, Nick Saban is the greatest football coach in the "modern" era. (~1990 until present).

Finally, I have been catching some heat for my 60% belief that Saban will be the Head Coach at the University of Texas next season. My goal is to ALWAYS be truthful to our members and if I post something then it is genuine and NOT pre-fabricated for effect! Having said that, after what I have heard over the past few days I am ready to bump that percentage AS OF RIGHT NOW to 100%! That's right. I said it! 100%. Things change but AT THIS MOMENT UNLESS THINGS CHANGE I am saying it is a 100% chance Nick Saban is the Head Coach at the University of Texas next season. How's that for a "Crossfire?

Change out Texas and Saban and replace it with Tennessee and Gruden and this is exactly the same bullshite on VolNation last year.
