Friedman said recently the league wasn't impressed with the Toyota Center. But if Fertitta or the city is willing to pump in some upgrades it might be enough. Assuming the Coyotes owner is willing to sell.

I think Fertitta would 100% upgrade the arena as part of owning an NHL team (and would be interested in buying them as well). The question is how it would work if he didn’t own the team. I think that would be trickier. The arena needs upgrades and there’s been rumors they are coming anyways

At the least the Winnipeg Jets should buy back their old history from the Coyotes

Winnipeg Jets became Coyotes
Thrashers became new Winnipeg Jets

Yep, easy to follow

I am generally curious...with population growth trends in the US over the last 2-3 decades and with the census estimates into the future...i wonder when/if cities like Boise or Omaha will ever be considered for pro sports? NHL and MLS specifically. At some point, current major league cities are going to become too saturated with franchises and it makes me wonder if a sport like NHL or MLS will take a chance on a city like Boise or Omaha? Boise and Omaha are BOOMING with no signs of slowing down. Boise metro is currently right around 800k with Census estimates projected to be at 1.6 mill by 2050. Generally curious...

Edmonton = 1.4 mill
Calgary = 1.3 mill
Omaha = 970k
Quebec = 839K
Winnipeg = 834k
Boise = 800k

The Tempe arena was mostly going to be privately financed. Meruelo is now probably wondering if he'll ever get any public money to get something done.

Does the city or Fertitta own the Toyota Center? All I found was he controls it. The Jazz owner met with Bettman last year. I don't know if it makes a difference, but he owns the arena. But it only holds 14000 for hockey. We're now in a holding pattern for Mereulo's next step.

Hasn’t atlanta had two chances to get the nhl right and both times the teams left?

Only dude to shitty ownership that cared more about suing each other than actually investing in the team

I realize this time the plan is for the suburbs, but it seems like a fresh start in another city is a much better option.

The Flames are an irrelevant data point at this time. The city is completely different.

The Thrashers were sabotaged by their ownership, inexplicably were unable to keep Kovalchuk, and had some bad luck with players like Dany Heatley (who went on to be a stud in Ottawa) and Patrik Stefan who was I think their first ever top pick and was a dud.

I know it will never happen but I wish nola could get even a minor league team again.
im hoping Houston gets an expansion team, and in turn brings an AHL team to New Orleans to keep their feeder team close for call ups

Such a tired-arse talking point. The last relocation was to Winnipeg, a town so irrelevant on the North American stage that it's about the size of Columbia, SC, with fewer corporate headquarters.

The majority of Canadian cities do not have the corporate infrastructure required to support major pro sports- and those thay do, already have teams. Quebec City most likely could not, but even if it could, the Francophone cultural hurdles are such that true success is almost impossible- just like modern-Era Monrteal. The fans will demand French players, French coaches, and French GMs, limiting an otherwise limited talent pool.

But blame Bettman. I don't like the guy either, but this isn't realistic grounds for complaint.

Yes, partly because the demographics of Atlanta proper aren't favorable to hockey.

The demographics of Alpharetta, which is the proposed location of a new arena (it's happening with or without the NHL) are much more in line.

The folks on here who seriously suggest the Astros or Rockets build a new stadium in The Woodlands or Sugar Land always give me a good laugh
