Just saw this article and man, Les was completely wrong.

Chase

quote:

Asked Wednesday ahead of the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs how he approaches someone telling him he can't do something, Chase offered an anecdote from his high school recruitment.

quote:

"I could tell you, honestly, one of my best stories ever: Les Miles told me I couldn't play receiver when I was coming out of high school," Chase said. "That was something I had on my shoulders growing up. Les Miles told me he thought I could play cornerback, I wasn't really in full position at receiver yet. So I just kept working on my craft, offseason waking up early in the mornings to work out. I just kept focused."

And 31 teams including New England passed on Tom Brady 6 times. 28 passed on Joe Montana at least twice. Nick Saban drafted Ronnie Brown #2 instead of Aaron Rodgers AND passed on Drew Brees. Sometimes they miss

It seems to me that if Les Miles thought that Chase could play CB, then he certainly thought that he could play WR. Looks like Miles just thought that he'd be a good CB.

Yep, chase was going to UF or somewhere else prior to O coming in as the head guy.

Mike Archer didn't think Marshall Faulk could play running back. He recruited him strictly as a DB.

So did Dennis Erickson at Miami and ever other big school that’s why Faulk went to SDSU

He thought Dak Prescott was a tight end.

Miles was great at convincing players to sign with LSU but he was terrible at personnel evaluation, especially on offense and especially at quarterback. And offense was his side of the ball.

And, apparently, he was also a pervert.

to be fair, Chase would have been wasted at WR under Les Miles

To be fair,

Ja'Marr would have been an all-american CB under Les. But as a Wr, he would have topped out at about 50 catches and 5 touchdowns.

he clearly is fine at WR but his speed and strength could have made for a elite CB.

Another piece of context missing here is that Les probably told Chase this back when he was a sophomore in HS. From what I’ve read, there were question marks about Chase’s catching ability/hands even through his freshman year at LSU. Obviously he has worked on that and has some of the best hands in the game, but sounds like he was a LONG way off from that when Les told him to move to CB.

Chase would also probably be an all pro CB with his size and speed.

The way the story reads with Chase’s comments indicate he may have never become the player he is today without Miles telling him that.

The work Jerry Sullivan did with chase and Jefferson their freshman years is oftentimes ignored. Those guys really improved quickly.
