Yeah I agree you pay it but woof, that will be crazy at 36.

If you are interested in building a dynasty, no way you should take that much money from your team. Especially since you have a lifetime contract with Nike worth god money.
This is just another max deal. It looks gaudy, but the cap will also be about 54% higher in 2017 than it was this season.

For further perspective, the salary cap in '97-98 was $26.9 million.
and jordan's salary was what? $33M?
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:23 pm to slackster
at the end of his deal he would 18 seasons in...not with that mileage...but Cleveland is a unique scenario.

Fill me in on the over 36 rule?
quote:
Over 36 Rules. In certain cases involving contracts of four years or more, salary payable for seasons beginning after the player turns 36 is treated as deferred compensation in the seasons before the player turns 36 (and is therefore counted against the Cap in those seasons).
So basically the final year of the contract would be split between the first 4 years of the contract and count against the cap in those years. That might not seem like a big deal, but I believe it also means adding to the luxury tax required to be paid for those seasons. I'm not 100% on that, but I believe that's the big issue.
He could say F You Dan Gilbert. Pay me or I'm leaving. I guess that's also pretty likely. I don't see LeBron ever taking a discount to play for Dan Gilbert.

Yeah. Jesus the money over the cap for the 1998 Bulls has to be a record as a percentage of the cap.

if he were 4 years younger yes. not paying 36 year old lebron 49 million dollars

I'd front load his contract if I could
quote:So this postseason and in the Finals, he was about as good as we've ever seen with more miles on his body in his 1st 13 years than every player not named Wilt, and in 2 seasons he won't even be "solid"???
He only has 2 solid years left on his body.
As of right now, there'sno reason to really believe he won't be at the very least a top 10 player all the way up to the age of 36 IMO. Barring injury of course.

49 million per year is insane
But is it really? It really isn't that far off from some of these baseball contracts.

Yep.
quote:
In the 1997-1998 season, Jordan made $33.1 million. It's still the highest single-season NBA salary ever. At the time the salary cap was $26.9 million, and the average NBA team payroll was $32.7 million. There was no maximum salary rule, and teams were allowed to go over the $26.9 million salary cap to re-sign their own free agents. So in summer 1997, Jordan signed a one-year, $33.1 million contract that would be impossible under the maximum salary rules, which were established in response to the contract in 1999. Jordan's 1997-1998 contract was insane in retrospect. His salary alone was more than the entire payrolls of 19 out of 29 NBA teams that year. If the same rules were in effect today, Jordan's salary would be worth $66.6 million, based on adjusted average payroll numbers. $66.6 million!

it's only 49 million in the last year. Not per year.

$49mil then is the equivalent of about $32mil now. Every team would lineup to pay Lebron $32mil. And again, that's just the last year of the deal, each year before is cheaper.
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:29 pm to slackster
Yes, and he will age well. He can easily slide into a great 4.
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:30 pm to slackster
LeBron has Nike money he's never been underpaid
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:31 pm to slackster
frick yes you pay him and $49M is still probably less than he would get in a true free market.
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:31 pm to ZoeFemme
Yeah I could be off on the details because I'm no CBA expert but he'll be eligible for a 5yr/$200M contract.
Carmelo is getting $130/5yrs and I believe that's the highest total in the league now. I think Lillard has a crazy total too.

Why didn't Pippen get a bigger contract?
