Im not surprised. Its not often at all you see Boras guys sign a long term prior to free agency. He is not a free agent until 2022.

And I have no doubt that Boras and/or Bryant are waiting to stick it to the Cubs for the service time manipulation in 2015.

I almost don’t blame him either. Sure on the surface you could say “how could he turn that kind of money down?” The argument against signing a long term deal esrly would be Anthony Rizzo, who is entering the final year of a 7/$44M deal, which he has vastly outperformed.

Wonder what the length was. The days of locking up elite young talent past their arb years are largely over.

Wouldnt blame them. That is the risk you take when you do that

I doubt KB cares about the service time thing, but Boras absolutely does. Just amazing that someone coming off the year he had can turn down that money. Don’t blame him at all though.

He would be putting a cap on what he'll make before he even hits the market. I'm not surprised or worried.

No doubt about it. Those two weeks or so, kept his client under Cubs control for another year, and ultimately delayed him from getting paid in free agency.

He’s definitely gonna wan to see what Harper sets the market at.

And he’ll want to see if he can bounce back to 2016 form next year.

He wasn’t 100% almost this entire season.

Not really surprising given the current climate

He should take it given his shoulder issues. Those are hard to bounce back from. Theres a chance he never regains his form.

Have a hard time believing KB is pissed about it.

Sure but there's a big difference in numbers here

I dont think KB is really pissed about it but its possible.

Yeah of course there’s a big difference in numbers. Point is Rizzo signed early and outperformed his deal

Would this happen if baseball had a salary cap?

Yes. Its more of a free agency issue than a salary cap issue.

The money would likely be less, or structured differently if there was a cap, but if the free agency/service time rules were the same it would still occur

I wouldn't be surprised to see him negotiate and sign a deal after Machado and Harper set the market. He'll want what they get though

Why would he accept that deal? He's going to get at least 300 in the open market barring a David Wright run of luck with injuries.

Absolutely and he's still butt hurt over it.

It is amazing but I gotta say I'm worried about KB. His hitting with RISP the last 2 years has been abysmal and concerns are legit. He still gets the benefit of the doubt because of his first two years and the injury, but next year is huge for him.

Am I the only one thinking this is a vast overestimation?

Yea bc he will be 30 when he hits free agency in 2022. He won’t sniff 300 mil, prob won’t sniff 200 tbh if he waits til 30

He can be bitter with the cubs for starting his clock when they did, but the Cubs hold all the cards with him.

Boras fricked arrieta by not getting an extension for him after 2015 or even 2016, instead having him go to free agency thinking he was gonna cash.

Boras also wanted $200 mil for a 30 year old JD Martinez. Ended up with 5/110.

Bryant will have to come to an agreement with the cubs on an extension if he wants to get paid paid
