This Lakers team shows flashes. I imagine once they get their chemistry down they'll be an offensive force with excellent passing, spacing, and shooting.. and there's no reason for them not to be a top 10 defense team with Howard, even though his metrics are kind of poor this year and he's not really playing like a superstar.

also a team like the Lakers becomes stronger in the playoffs because the minutes of their lousy bench becomes reduced.

At the end of the day though, no sure they have enoguh to beat the Heat..and probably the Thunder/Clippers/Spurs. Nash is great, but he is such a glaring hole defensively and there's no way the good teams won't punish the Lakers for that. Also, they might simply not be "good enough"

This whole thread is one big post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. The reason he volume shoots in certain games is obvious to those who WATCH him play.

1. A lot of his shots in these types of games come toward the end of the shot clock when he is being used to bail them out of a possession
2. He tends to shoot more when the Lakers are down or he feels they are being passive on offense/defense. A lot of stars will sit back and watch their stats. Kobe doesn't care, if he sees his team slacking he puts the pedal to the metal and goes.
3. Kobe was hacked relentlessly all night. Anyone wanna count how many free throws Kobe got from shooting the ball 41 times with 19 shots in the paint? ZERO. That's right, ZERO. Name the last time in NBA history a player with 40+ shots had zero shooting fouls called in their favor.

Oh...and the Lakers have won 4 straight, Kobe is having a career year in efficiency, and extended his NBA record.

I don't think you want to be bragging about the Lakers 4 game win streak when they only beat one good team in the stretch, and that streak is 1/3 of the Clippers'.

I love how you listed all of Kobe's 40+ FGA games to show he is a chucker but failing to see he is shooting >= 50% in those games combined.

Oops.

Also just looked it up. We just witnessed NBA history. Last night was the most FGA in a game with a shooting foul. NBA history.

He's shooting like 47% this year?

Points from offensive rebounds are scored from Kobe's missed shots at a far higher % than any other players. It's so high that even when he shoots 40% the team scores on 60% of the possessions where he shoots. People don't know shite like this about Kobe. It's not a metric the league measures but its a BIG fricking deal and it shows why Kobe is still the best offensive player in the game.
Best Offensive player int he game, What?

Please show me the article.

Kobe the best offensive player in the game?

great player, but extremely overrated
This.

Kobe is an all time great. But people who put him in the top 3 or 5, no chance. He's top 20-25, that's nothing to be ashamed of, not remotely a knock on him.

Hell, no one EVER gives this guy that kind of love, but compare DWade's career stats to Kobe's. Wade is a better. He produces more AND more efficiently. He may not have the longevity obviously, but his peak is better than Kobe's, any way you look at the production shows that.

Someone posted the grantland article in here I think. An interesting read, but not exactly a defense for shooting 40+ times.

Reading it now.

Looks like it also says Kobe trails Dion Waiters in this category. So uhh, that's pretty telling lol. Does Dion Waiters know the trick better than everyone else in the league?

And the DRose/Elton Brand thing is pretty silly as a comparison. Brand is a low post player, so when he shoots, of course they will rebound at a lesser rate, they're short one low post player. And when DRose shoots a jumper, they still have a PF and C to crash the boards. That one seemed obvious, I could have guessed who would have the higher Off. Rebound rate on that one.

Has anyone pointed out the fact that when Kobe misses he has had some freak athletes rebounding for him? That obviously doesn't blow up the article or stat but it sure as hell helps when he misses.

I know it sounds ridiculous but I just read this LONG article where a basketball writer broke it down. It was CRAZY how far ahead of other players he was. It's like he sees where people will be in position to rebound and if he misses its either long or short depending on where they have rebounders and the rebounders of his shots score like 85% of the time. He went back years and compared him to everyone and every single year Kobe was way ahead. It's a crazy stat but it really showed how valuable his shots were.

I'm sure those numbers have NOTHING to do with Kobe almost always playing with great bigs who rebound well. No, no, no. Having guys like Shaq, Bynum, Pau, and Howard his while career? Doesn't inflate that stat at all.

and LOfingL at theunknownknight's defense of Kobe's ball hogging. The dude doesn't get shots late b/c he is bailing out his team. He usually gets them b/c holds the damn ball too long. There were tons of moments last night where he held the ball, took a really tough shot, and had an open guy he could have easily wing the ball to. Hell, on his attempt to win it in regulation all he had to do was pass it back to a wide open Nash on the perimeter but he wanted the glory of the game winner and bricked.

I'm not a big Kobe fan but to put Dwayne Wade ahead of him is a joke IMO.
