I love two things about when this argument always comes up.
1. People discount Kobe's past because it is in the past and he had help with his success (Shaq).
2. People say Lebron is better (not because he is actually better), but because they perceive that he hasn't reached his full potential yet.
So, on one hand, the past can't be used to determine who is better. But, on the other, the future can be used.
It's pretty simple. Lebron has no jumpshot. He drives to the goal like a bull in a china closet and throws people out of the way.
Even though Kobe doesn't do that, he can still drive to the goal and score on people just as successfully. Add to that the fact that he can make a shot outside of 4 feet and you can easily see why "currently" he is better than Lebron.
Will "future Lebron" be better than Kobe is now? who knows? but, that isn't the question is it?

we can argue about the strengths/weaknesses of each of their games all night long
semi-related to the discussion... i want to see a cavs-lakers final when the cavs are fully healthy (lakers too)... i think that'll be epic and my head might explode

You say that like it's a bad thing, but it's pretty unstopable.
I really think that Kobe this year has been relying on his jump shot too much. I would love to see him trade in a couple turn around jumpers for some drives to the basket. Other than that, I am loving his play this season.

quote:That's the thing. This year he really hasn't had to drive to the basket alot b/c he has an awesome supporting cast. Kobe is just as dominant as Lebron when he puts the ball on the floor and goes to the hole

I know people keep saying Kobe has a better all around game, but Lebron doesn't play the same position.
Lebron could be a strong PF and guard big men because he is huge. The guy is 6'8 and listed at 250 lbs. Some say he is even bigger than that. He has probably around 2 inches on Kobe and also about 50 lbs. If Lebron shot the 3 as well as Kobe it wouldn't even be close. A lot of people are forgetting that Lebron could play with the big men. So this is ridiculous to sit here and call Kobe a more all around player when Lebron is the size of a big PF and Kobe is a big SG of typical SF. I would say Lebron's size, stength, and quickness make up for Kobe's advantage in shooting. Lebron is at least Kobe's equal.
The fact Kobe has rings is ridiculous. Kobe started winning Championships with Shaq at the stage Lebron is at in his career now. I think it was around season 5 of Kobe's career. Does anyone think the Cavs wouldn't win the championship for at least the next 3 years if Lebron had someone like Shaq in his prime? The Cavs would blow by everyone in the league.
So Ben Wallace is called a Foward-Center by NBA.com. Wallace and James are about the same size. I would guess James is roughly as strong as Wallace. So James could play roughly every position on the court with his size and skills.

Neither did Shaq. Was he never the best player in the league? Kobe is a shooting guard. Lebron is a forward.

lebron is a better driver than kobe, and kobe can't drive every time b/c his body can't take the pounding

Because he's 30 and Lebron is 23, not because he's physically incapable. Kobe has so much mileage on his body that I don't blame him for settling for jumpers.
