I found out while house hunting. Song I was listening to was Don McLean’s “American Pie” that had repeated mentions of “The Day the Music Died” when Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash. To me, today was the day that basketball died.

Anybody find this old Nike ad weird at least.. the context in the whole last scene just seems eerie.

After hearing details about he and his daughter the whole thing is just incredibly sad. He seemed like a very good father and such a young kid dying is horrible alone. It is an odd feeling I haven’t felt since Robin Williams and Steve Irwin when it comes to celebrities.

This is such a sad situation because it was avoidable. LE Officials grounded their choppers due to poor weather conditions. 9 people lost their lives because of poor decision making it would seem. Add to that , young ones with their whole life ahead of them perish through no fault of their own and it's a horrible tragedy.
John Denver, Rocky Marciano, Payne Stewart, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Holly all died tragically. RIP to all.

Just curious, how long would it have taken for Kobe and the rest to drive to where the basketball game yesterday?
I understand now that he typically helicoptered to a lot of places.
But, if it was borderline iffy whether to travel that way yesterday, what was an alternative?

The helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant and eight other passengers that crashed into a hillside in Southern California on Sunday was in a climbing left turn about 2,400 feet high before it dove

the helicopter was flying at about 160 knots (184 mph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute when it crashed.
Those poor little girls had 30 seconds to be terrified. frick

Man what a sad somber morning. Kobe is one of those rare people on the planet that demanded your attention when on the camera, regardless of your interest in NBA basketball. This one hits all the feels and honestly has me in a horrible mood for a few days if not weeks. Still unbelievable to me hearing all the words from everyone.

Did anybody see the rumor on Twitter that Kobe’s original pilot refused to fly the helicopter so Kobe found another pilot who would? That would explain a lot of things.

Most aviation crashes usually are avoidable. If procedures were followed correctly, those 9 people would still be alive today.

Kobe Bryant is the black Dale Earnhardt. You aren’t ever going to stop hearing about him

I think it crashed at 1400 ft, so it was more like 15 seconds. It was also very foggy, so there's a chance they didn't even realize what was happening until directly before.

I’m 31, Kobe was my childhood hero. I played 2 and the 3 guard in HS during his prime and remember idolizing him, mimicking him, and wanting to be great like him. I know to a lot, it’s silly, but there’s such a huge portion of people that just lost their first childhood hero. It’s so incredibly sad that his daughter passed as well and the 7 others, who are being overshadowed due to Kobe’s fame. It just doesn’t feel real.
