I like how you're cool with the slur of Rednecks.

Coaches used to all be like Bobby Knight.

Great coaches are usually gruff assholes. Part of being a great leader is often times being an authoritarian.

99% of things coaches get in trouble for these days would have been a complete non-issue, non-story 50 years ago.

The pussification of America is evident all over the place and it's no different in sports.

Foo-foo beta soy boys are a disgusting plague of vermin.

Then you’ve never met Coach Knight. Why lie on this board?

I don’t doubt coaches used to all scream at their players. I doubt all coaches used to grab their players by the neck.

Then wow you are very naive. They did that and a lot worse regularly.

Multiple kids were dragged around by the facemask at EVERY practice in the 80’s/90’s.

And not just in practice, during games too. Bill Curry and Lou Holtz were both very well known for it.

I remember in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 1989 season Alabama had a WR make a big catch and then get up and do a celebration which got a penalty, Bill Curry grabbed him by the facemask and dragged him over to the bench, screaming right in his face the entire time.

Nobody thought anything of it. There were no protests, no op-eds, no hashtag campaigns. It was called being a tough coach. Most old school coaches ran their teams like military units in terms of discipline and punishments.

Bear Bryant and the Junction Boys are a celebrated piece of college football lore. If a coach did anything even remotely close to that these days they would be fired and likely jailed.

What a shocker that MESPNBC goes after Knight's legacy since he helped get DJT elected.

Didn't see that one coming

You’re telling me ALL coaches used to do that and a lot worse? And I’m naive? Just because you can find some examples of football coaches that used to drag players around by their face masks doesn’t make your statement true at all.

That was brutal. Knight may have gone off the rails in his later years, but he also did some very good things on and off the court during his days at Indiana.

Overall, I thought the episode was sad. Sad for Knight and even sadder for ESPN. What is the point in crushing a 78 year old man?

I guess I am different in that I would never be able to do a story where I knew I would be doing nothing but a hatchet job.

. Bull shite.

Give me the video of John Wooden during his 10 Championship dynasty screaming & cursing like a damn lunatic. Dean Smith & his players swore that he never used profanity in 3 or 4 decades Coaching.

Bobby Bowden "dat gummit"( strong language for Bowden) didn't act like a freaking lunatic who thinks women should just enjoy rape. That old Bobby Knight humor , huh?

People like you enabled the Bobby Knights of the world.

Please, I had coaches that did worse

Knight ma have been an a-hole no doubt, but there are many former players of his that positively respect the guy and credit him with changing the course of their lives.

He had one of the highest 4 year graduation rates in college basketball and made sure these kids not only went to class but that they took meaningful classes

That was common and prerequisite for being a football coach. being smacked upside the helmet and being knocked on your asss unexpectedly by said coach was pretty common as well.. It taught us not to frick with him
