What an incredibly written article. I had forgotten about this.
Sports writing and journalism in general has fallen off the steepest cliff it could have in the decade since. And this was a college kid.
Incredible article

Sad part is that he went on to law school instead of sports journalism for a living. His bio at the bottom of the page has been updated.

Yet another game in Alabama history that not having a kicker keeps the Tide from getting the W.
And I'm not even talking about the missed long kick at the end. That was attempted by a freshman because the regular Bama kicker had already missed 3 FGs that game, plus we didn't even try a short FG late in the game.

Perhaps the best writeup was a Wisconsin alum who was on a college football big game bucket list tour, and had picked that game. He said he was so emotionally drained after the game that they didn't even have the energy to go to Toomer's, despite it being one of their bucket list events to attend. He posted detailed writeups of every bucket list game they went to on the Wiscy Scout board.

If it's the guy I'm thinking, as the OP says it's been a while ago, he passed away in the last year.

Missed at least one of those really bad. Auburn blocked one. Then, Saban goes for it on 4th and 1 well within FG range and Auburn stuffs it and scores the tying TD on the ensuing possession.

The last play overshadows (deservedly so) what was a fantastic football game up to that point. So many momentum twists and turns. That 99 yard pass to Cooper was one where I thought that was the point where it was all going to fall apart. I just knew Bama was going to rip our hearts out and deny Auburn the trip to Atlanta. Such a good game.
