I hope you're not talking about the track/facility itself. Took my first trip to the Derby this year (Oaks on Friday, Derby on Saturday). I don't have enough good things to say about the weekend. It was great. CD does things right.

FIFY

although I think you are marginalizing LD's business acumen just a tad. She didn't inherit her money. She keeps building and promoting her brand successfully. And in a relatively wholesome manner. Thats a bit more significant than the hawktuah whore that got some money and notoriety for being...whorish.

Every day out of the year that isn’t considered derby related, it is a shithole, though.

Skipping the Preakness? Load management is out of control. These horses are pre Madonnas

Gotta be fixed in the breeding shed. His dad is not known for producing super sound horses with long careers. He’ll continue that tradition.

Correct, though regular cameras are.

Ahh gotcha did not know that. Just was seeing more “influencer” type content from the practice rounds this year. Thought they were using phones.

If you pay attention lots of those are not anywhere close to the grounds of Augusta national. They’re curated to look like they’re on grounds. But likely taken somewhere else.

ETA: I noticed the same thing.

Derby winner skipping the preakness. Sucks for nbc. He’ll run 3-4 more times then retire. Into mischief’s are so damn fragile. Then he’ll breed more fragile babies

Such bullshite. IMO you shouldn’t be able to skip a leg if you win. If you do have to skip Preakness you shouldn’t be able to run Belmont. They should also make some of the derby purse contingent on running both Preakness and belmont.

Ehhhh, I’m fine with them skipping. I’d rather that than a derby winner break down in the Preakness. What needs to stop is all the talk of spacing out the races more. It’s supposed to be hard. If we change things we’ll have a winner every few years and it will lose meaning. I’m especially fine with it this year since the Belmont is at Saratoga and only a mile and a quarter…

Mott’s last “derby winner” skipped the Preakness and was never seen again. Rich Strike skipped, and… well… we know how that ended up.

When they skip there is a reason.

One I saw that had tournament round tickets complained that she had to leave her phone outside and wished she had practice round tix just to be able to bring in a camera

Well if he’s legitimately injured and breaks down on national TV it’s gonna be even worse. If they want to rest him, so be it. It ain’t your horse.

Aspy is correct that they don’t need to alter the schedule. The triple crown is supposed to be challenging. Trying to
Manufacture a winner won’t work either.

They'll run in the Belmont, then the Travers. Remember, same track, same distances. Mott has rarely, if ever come back in 2 weeks. From a wagering standpoint, its better, because the price won't be as chalky. I always hated that race anyway. Uncle Bob ships, then he means business.

And you know how I feel about his sire.

And like I said… maybe 4 more races tops then retirement? Just say the horse isn’t ready. Don’t pretend it’s to have a “career” we all know won’t happen. If he’s off the board in either race you mentioned, he’s gone to preserve his reputation for stud. This is why I like the filly division.

And we get yet another fricking into mischief at stud. Hopefully some of these get at least a little durability from their dams. Our breeding industry is fully broken here.

people need to realize that horses will breakdown. its a part of the sport. I dont think its fair to the triple crown, the fans, the sport, or the other horses in the derby for the winner not to run the next race if he is capable. If he chooses not to or isnt capable, then there should be some type of repercussion.

You just meaning that it ended up that he never won again?

American Pharoah is the most fun I've had watching a horse in my lifetime, but drone footage of Rich Strikes win is about as good as it gets. Jokey put on a masterclass and Rich Strike looked like he literally turned on the after burners towards the end and hit a different gear from every other horse in the race. You can clearly see the moment he took it to the next level. I get chills every time I watch that highlight.

Smarty Jones was another favorite of mine. Freaking jokey cost him the triple crown.

From 1982 to 2018, 36 years, 3 derby winners skipped

From 2019-2025, 6 years, we now have 4 winners skip

What changed?

Preakness is so lame without the derby winner. Crappy ghetto track, tiny field. You know they start punching air when the derby winner pulls out.
