Watching the Lakers-Celtics rivalry and the rough and tumble NBA of the period, I always thought of Kareem as a guy who really didn’t want to mix it up. I saw this yesterday and was a bit surprised.

People labeled Kareem soft because he was thin and played an offensive game based off skill and finesse.

Kareem was actually pretty tough.

Man, that was a nice punch. Compare that to the wild swing Shaq threw at Chuck. Also, if you throw a cheap elbow to someone's gut, you better keep your head on a swivel.

you were surprised a soft basketball player would sucker punch a person and immediately retreat? That was not anything close to what a tough person does. However, he was very hypocritical there seeing as he was such a big pacifist.

LISTEN! He's been hearing that crap ever since he was at UCLA. He's out there busting his buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

When you hit someone on the junk, there is no such thing as being sucker punched shortly after.

Dude went 167-4 in 4 years of H.S. and 3 years of College.

I doubt you can dominate like that if you're soft.

Yeah Kareem dominated the 70's when everyone was high on cocaine and fighting each other.

Hell Rudy Tomjanovich was almost killed on the court by the Lakers Kermit Washington.

The NBA was rougher than Rucker Park in the 70's. There was no love-fests (as Larry Bird calls them) before games like there is today.

He is a strange guy, so he was always hard to pigeon hole. He always had an air of aloofness like he wasn't comfortable in his own skin. But for his thin build he was tough. And he didn't back down.

You REALLY don’t know KAJ.

HE punches Kent Benson in the face when he returned to Milwaukee.

No, I don’t. I know he was a great player, but I know that his reputation didn’t necessarily equate to his skills on the court, including being called soft by SOME.

soft or tough, always a question as to why he wasn’t or now isn’t considered coaching material at collegiate or pro level...

Those people are idiots. And clearly didn’t watch the nba back then.

It was a league of big, strong plodders. Guys that wouldn’t be close to the league now cause of lack of speed and athleticism.

No 3 pointer. Action in the paint. Nobody could play down low and be soft.

Hell, I remember an SI cover w Lloyd Neal, iirc, with him going into the basket leading with his knee. Caption was something about whether the nba was too rough.
