Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: There is no such thing as a singular GOAT, there can be more than one

quote:

“These GOAT discussions are fun distractions while sitting around waiting for the pizza to be served,” Abdul-Jabbar told The Undefeated. “But they’re on a par with ‘Which superpower would you want most: flight or invisibility?’ Whether I’m included or not in anyone’s list doesn’t matter. I played my hardest and I helped my teammates. That’s the most important thing I walked away with.

“The reason there is no such thing as the GOAT is because every player plays under unique circumstances. We played different positions, under different rules, with different teammates, with different coaches. Every player has to adapt to their circumstances and find a way to excel. This isn’t Highlander. There can be more than one.”

The most over-used cliche of the modern era

Not only that, but it has no application to this topic at all. The OP is literally about the GREATEST players of all-time - I can't think of anything further from the cliche you used.

This is nothing against Kareem but that quote made me immediately think of this scene:

YouTube

Regardless of what Kareem says, he is the GOAT college player of all-time.

His dominance and records and winning is unmatched.

Kareem showed how dominant he could be as he led the frosh team to a 75-60 win over the 2-time National Champion Bruins in an intrasqaud game.

In the next three years (1966-69), Alcindor led UCLA to three more championships and an overall record of 88-2. In that time he was a 3-time NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, a 3-time National College Player of the Year and a 3-time 1st team All-American.

If he could have played his freshman year, he would have been 4-time National College Player of the Year and probably a 4-time NCAA champion.

If you wanted a reason why Kareem isn't in that conversation, despite being arguably the most supremely talented guy in the league for the better part of 2 decades....that's it in a nutshell.

He is absolutely in the conversation. The only reason he doesn't get more love is his prime was just before David Stern turned the league around and got it the TV coverage it needed to be talked about by people outside of the cities that had teams.

If you took the totality of a career...and asked who was the most dominant basketball player of all-time from birth to death.

It would be Kareem.

People say he is the best High School player or all-time, he is easily the best College Basketball player of all-time...and he has a legit argument for the greatest NBA player of all-time.

If you had a fantasy league for basketball that encompassed a player's entire career - there isn't a single person who wouldn't take Kareem.

He dominated and won at every level and scored more points than anyone.

Kareem won 10 Titles.

6 NBA
3 NCAA
1 National High School (with one runner-up)

In 7 years, Kareem went 167-4. High school and College.
