The decision to have Goldberg take the title off of Hogan at a soldout Georgia Dome..at a cable tv Nitro event televised on TNT.

That decision started the descent. WCW was so obsessed with the Monday night rating war that it would unload all of its bullets at it and eventually they realized they were out of ammo. Then it was full on desperation.

That whole night was a gigantic own goal by WCW.

They booked a rematch of Nash-Goldberg which didn’t happen.

And Bischoff had Tony Schivone reveal Mick Foley was winning the title on Raw then make snarky comments about it.

Then that abortion bucket leftover happened.

Doesn’t even go into the stupidity of Goldberg being arrested and processed at a PD station right across the street from the Georgia Dome yet being unable to make it back to be in the main event.

That was just a Russian nesting doll of own goals by WCW.

I think Bischoff still wanted it
Yes, Bischoff was ready to buy it but AOL/TW told him he would not have a time slot on their networks - and thus Bischoff backed out because no other networks were ready for his asking price.

It wasn't the streak ending, it was how they ended it - typical WCW gimmick garbage. Everyone was BEYOND tired of the constant interference in every single main event for the last two years. It was the second time that WCW built up a huge story and couldn't have a clean finish. Nash beats Goldberg clean? There's no gripes. It was going to have to happen eventually.

Then of course the fingerpoke just made a mockery of the streak. It was all thrown away in the span of ten seconds - and was the coup de grace for a lot of the USA-TNT channel flippers.

God that Nitro in the Superdome in June 1999 was an absolute disaster. I walked out of the Dome that night and never bothered with WCW again.

I was at Uncensored 1998. It was a pretty decent card, but the main event was Savage/Hogan in a Cage match.

that match itself wasn't very good.

but at what point, Hogan had Savage in a choke hold, and they were both catching their wind so to speak.

All of a sudden, a voice yells, " You suck Hogan" to which he replied, " So does your mother!!"

Got a lot of laughs from the crowd.

I always thought it was putting half the roster in the NWO. Storylines just disappeared and matches never had a victor. It was always dq’s or winning by interference

When the bell rung to begin the main event of Starrcade 97. That PPV was and still is the most bought ppv in history that wasn’t a WrestleMania (I believe either one Royal Rumble or SummerSlam may have outsold it too) and it was time for WCW to put WWF away. And then the ending of the match happened and then the follow up on Nitro and so on and such.

A lot of people point to that, but the pendulum had already started to swing back before that Nitro. I would say it was Nitro 100 when Luger beat Hogan for the title. WCW was white hot and absolutely destroying WWF in ratings at the time.

People like to hate on Luger, but that crowd went absolutely crazy when he won.

I always thought that the biggest issue, beyond booking or any of the nonsense NWO storylines, was that WCW kept hiring away WWF top guys to diminishing returns, the guys who were increasingly past their primes and were planted at the top of the card limiting opportunities for young talent. Meanwhile, WWF went young with Rock, Stone Cold, HHH, and later Angle. Even Taker and Kane were still only a few years into their runs. I think this dynamic, the opportunity to perform and rise up the card, was obvious to the younger talent at WCW, leading to Jericho and the Radicalz bolting over to WWE.
