Jordan is no longer “statistically” the GOAT by a long shot. The GOATs are playing today

At least according to PER

Career leaders in PER

1. Embiid 28.5
2. Jokic 28
3. Jordan 27.9
4. James 27.1
5. Anthony Davis 26.9

It's time we accept players like Anthony Davis into the GOAT debate as well as Hassan Whiteside, Durant, Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Leonard, Karl Anthony Towns, Harden, Giannis, Neil Johnston, and Luka.

Half of the top 25 players ever have played in the last 5 years. What a time to be alive.

If statistics are the measure the past has no chance in football and basketball. Everything is slanted towards offensive players putting up stats that players without that benefit cant compete with them. I saw Jordan. Have yet to see anyone better since and those before him say he's the best they've seen by an overwhelming majority.

TotesMcgotes said Shabazz Napier was a better player than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander cause PER said so

Also said he would be an all star only cause I said he would be from the eye test

Boy was that an all time fail

If by three years you mean 1.5 years suspended sure

Intro to sad music: Jordan played in 1995 and lost to Shaq while putting up numbers on par or higher than the second three-peat because the Bulls were without Horace Grant as he was playing with Shaq… End sad music

Wilt went from the most unstoppable player ever to a 24ppg guy in his prime just because the lane was widened from 12 to 16 feet. It’s the perfect example of how rules can manipulate stats.

Dumb gotcha thread.

Jordan had a career PER of 29.1 until he went to Washington.

Let’s see how Embiid’s career progresses.

Players can put up all the stats they have but the mystique and aura of Jordan will NEVER be topped. Deal with it.

Did he go to Washington? Then your point is moot.

Now think about what it says about Jordan being up there

Which significantly discredits the stat when looking at it from an historical perspective. Shows a clear correlation to a change in the sport that drags everyone upwards. Like comparing passing statistics in this pansy arse 2024 NFL to Dan Marino getting body slammed every play and still doing the same numbers.

Alperen Sengun’s career is going to make MJ’s career look like Smush Parker’s.

It does open up interesting discussions b/c of how bad basketball was in the late 80s through early 00s.

Stats that measure efficiency will obviously get better on the whole when the league focuses on efficiency, and will be inferior on the whole when the league focuses on inefficient (and bad/unintelligent) strategy.

The NBA makes this discussion the most interesting because the popularity of the league exploded as the game was getting very bad, so that POV frames the conversations for so many people. How much of a handicap do we have to give players from that era?

Something else to consider was how weak the guard position was in the 80’s and early 90’s over the span of 25+ teams compared to 2000 and onward.

The big men ruled the game back then so if you were great in the SG position, you could run wild because most SGs sucked and no zone allowed Jordan to run past these slow dudes (hand checking actually HELPED him because he would lean into defenders and use their momentum against them)

That's because if you include current players you are going to capture current players' primes and not their declines. Embid, Jokic, and Davis are all currently at their peak.

Durant, Curry and Harden, still playing but mid-30s, are well down the list.

Who's the closest player to Jordan who is done playing? It's Shaq, at 26.4.

If anything, it shows that LeBron and Jordan are the real outliers. But LeBron has already fallen below Jordan and is probably going to fall further if he plays again next year.

Give me a year when Jordan's PER was around 36. I'll wait.
