Steals, assists, and free throw shooting percentage matter too. That's in favor of Guards.
You missed the point. Big man stats like rebounds are weighted more heavily than guard stats like steals and assists.

What do you think is more important in a player? Someone who grabs a couple more rebounds than the average player or someone who can facilitate which directly leads to scoring? Yet if PER was any indication, grabbing a couple more rebounds drastically increases PER.

No one plays an ounce of defense today.

Go watch highlights from 80’s and 90’s bball. There used to be a thing called defense.

80s basketball and defense don't go together.

80s basketball was the king of turnovers and free throw attempts. Sloppy basketball that nostalgia has romanticized into good defense.

It is extremely hard to play defense today. That is why it feels like that.

Back before the 2000s you could not play the same zone schemes. This led to the ability to play iso ball and players like Jordan just totally dominated as they would send everyone to the other side of the floor and he would cook people. Also this allowed big men to thrive also.

Then they went to a zone it collapsed the paint and then big men and these iso players had no where to work.

Players then evolved the game and they started spreading out the defense with elite shooting.

It is harder to defend now because of the much higher offensive skill throughout the league in shooting.
