Is this resignation by Tressel admirable or ashamefull?

It is guttless.

Probably not gutless since in all likelihood it was forced. The AD's comments certainly make that look most probable. He simply says after consulting with Tressel on his return from a vacation, Tressel offered his resignation. But no indication was given that he was asked to stay or that it was purely Tressel's idea. It sounds very much like, "resign or be terminated."

If OSU fully cooperates and there is no proof that others were involved, what are the gonna do?

Like I said, they won't do that to anyone without more than adequate proof, but they don't necessarily need it.

You seem to think that the NCAA is governed by the rule of law. They aren't and they make arbitrary rulings all the time. If they ruled that OSU deserved the hammer, then they would give it to them.

What would OSU do, fight the ruling in the court of law? Doubtful, because if they did that, then subpoena power and the threat of perjury would come into play. When all these players and coaches are being asked what they know, they then have to answer truthfully. They can't pull a Tressel and act like they didn't know unless they want jail time.

I know they don't need proof - but I'm saying if absolutely none exists I highly doubt they'll do something crazy.

This guy sees the forest through the trees instead of wasting time arguing about this nonsense which the NCAA wants you to get your panties in a twist about to support their legitimacy.

quote:

Since all of this began to unfold over tattoos worth roughly $15,000 – not the most earth-shattering event in the world, to say the least – when will the Ohio States and USCs of the world push and litigate to escape the NCAA and usher in the superconference era? Can we see how silly this is? Wait – wrong question. Can university presidents and athletic directors see how silly this is and cut bait with the NCAA while also maneuvering around Title IX to give football players – entertainers, let’s not fool ourselves – the ability to make money from products that are sold in or with their name? Can we get going on these issues now that $15,000 worth of tattoos have caused so many human persons to expend so much human energy on issues that are not the most urgent problems facing college sports?

All anyone needed to know about Tressel was playing the guys involved in the bowl game knowing they had broken NCAA rules, much less games played during the 2010 season. How many games did AJ Greene miss for UGA at the beginning of 2010? Who has ever heard of bait and switch to win a bowl and subsequently suspend the players for 5-games in the subsequent season? What else is Tressel hiding that the NCAA is going to use to blow up OSU?

F it, college sports have become so commercialized the players should be paid some cash as they are tied to the program for 10-11 months of the year as is.

not a chance in hell

the espn gig may be 1/4 the money, but it is 1/10 the stress. Not to mention, tOSU is about to get hammered with some pretty severe sanctions. They'll get some interim schmo that has ties to tOSU either as a former arse. corch or a player, then when the sanctions are over, go for a big gun.

The tatoo gate just started the digging process. They're uncovering more and more. Its not looking good for tOSU at all.

Well I'm sure a university can withdraw from the NCAA but then I doubt they'd be allowed to play a NCAA team. And if they could find someone to play, it's questionable whether they could get televised as the NCAA has friends in high places.

As for title IX, that's federal law and much more difficult to get around. So if they tried that, they'd get sued pretty quickly by someone.

So like it or not, the NCAA is most likely here to say.

As a southerner let me say I am outraged by these Yankee schools who cheat and overemphasize football.

97.1 The Fan was pretty epic on my way back from the fiance's today. One guy called in and said, "The next person who says Jim Tressel committed a crime, I'm going to sock 'em in the face."

There were some others, but that one cracked me up. It's hard to find laughter at such a sad time.

I had it on for 5 minutes and wanted to punch myself. The consensus seemed to be that lying to the ncaa wasn't that big of a deal.

as a fan of LSU -living 50 miles from Penn State - this in indeed a terribly sad day. First for OSU, and then the Big 10, the players and all others connected to Tressels's failure to comply and admit wrong a short time ago. He could still be there had he been honest to everyone. He got Pryor, wanted him badly and couldn't win the National Title with him. He gave toooo much rein to his best players. Sad day for a team with such great history. Remember the days of such greats like Matt Snell who went forward to help the Jets become a great team years ago!! Then OSU was good, proud and legal.

I don't see how tOSU will be able to avoid a lack of institutional control by blaming everything on Tressel. As head coach, Tressel is really the head of compliance for football. He is part of the institution and is responsible for the deceit.

Has anyone started the Miles to OSU rumor yet? If not let me be the first to toss it out there.

I heard an tOSU jet was sited at the Baton Rouge airport.
