Jeff Bower had to be one of the most loyal coaches

To the school he played for. Southern Mississippi was not a team to be messed with very option specifically if you were hunting easy wins. He owns a 21-0 (cover your eyes lsu) over Alabama in legion field and regularly had the golden eagles in bowl games. I find it impossible to believe he didn’t receive many opportunities for better jobs in his career however I don’t actually know which ones. Does anyone remember him being in coaching searches?

Southern was such a tough team back in the day. Very good defenses.

One of the biggest mistakes that Southern Miss ever made was running him off because they thought they were bigger than they were. The only noise I remember hearing was that Arkansas made a big run at him, but he refused to leave.

RC Slocum was like that w/A&M. Never had a losing record and could have easily found a new gig but instead stayed and became an awesome ambassador for the school.
He started at A&M in 1972 as an offensive assistant, worked his way up to being the DC and stayed until 1980, spent one year as DC at USC in 81, came right back to A&M the next year to be DC under Jackie Sherril and then proceeded to never leave.

He caught a lot of flack for the athletic departments limitations. Fans saw former rivals start to become bigger programs and join bigger conferences and he became the face of USM's stagnation.

I think he was reluctant to leave after his daughter was killed in a wreck and burried there

Southern Miss could play in those days. Gave Alabama all they wanted multiple years. Other top programs as well. Conference realignment really killed that program. For years they dominated Louisville, Cincinnati, and Memphis and the like. But those programs got scooped up and USM didn’t. Now they are a below average Sun Belt team.

No, that was a good decision. Hiring Ellis John four years later was the biggest mistake.
I can’t believe Southern Miss fans still have to explain this almost twenty years later.

Southern Miss nailed the hire after Bower. Program was stale. I was there. Fedora brought excitement.
Problem was once Fedora left for UNC, they tried to recreate Bower with Ellis Johnson. Killed the program.

USM during Bower was a pretty feared mid major. I was offended when they forced him out.

ELLLLLLLLLLLLoss definitely helped turn things in a bad direction. Monken got things going back in the right direction and Hopson kept things going pretty well but it seemed like the days of winning CUSA nearly every year were over by that time.
I think a lot of schools in the region moving from FCS or not existing at all to FBS and fighting Southern Miss for recruits didn't help.
