I knew Cobb was great, but this is the first time I've actually looked at his numbers.

I mean, he led the league in OPS+ twelve times. Cobb is on the short, short list of "greatest hitters"...Gwynn for as great as he was, isn't in the conversation.

Ted Williams could hit for average, he could hit a HR, he could hit the ball whatever the count, hit a curveball, slider, fastball, etc. That to me is the definition of a pure hitter. Not just a straight fastball slugger. It's about versatility. Ted Williams is the GOAT and Gwynn is up on that list. TG having 19 seasons batting over .300 in the majors makes him an elite batsman.

Pretty sure that Gwynn and Ty Cobb are the only 2 players ever to have a career avg over .330 and 300 SBs.

You know how far past those two numbers Ty Cobb went? He lapped Gwynn

Ty Cobb hit .366 and stole 897 bases.

So Cobb is the only player to:

hit .340 and steal 400 bases

hit .350 and steal 500 bases

hit .360 and steal 600 bases

hit .360 and steal 700 bases

hit .360 and steal 800 bases

First of all, Gwynn is not the greatest "hitter of all time".

By hitter, do you mean hit for average, or hit for power?

If you mean "hit for average", I'd go with:

1) Ted Williams
2) Ty Cobb
3) Rogers Hornsby

Gwynn would be maybe in the 10-15 range of best hitters for average.

If you mean overall hitting (including power), he's not in the Top 20

For this category, there's Babe Ruth, and then there's everyone else.

a nicer way of saying someone that has a great batting average but no power, like tony gwynn.

greatest hitter of all time is either williams or bonds. you have guys like aaron, mays and ruth that had huge power numbers and were .300 hitters, and then you have guys like cobb, gwynn and rose who were slapping singles all over the place and batting .350 with 7 home runs a year. williams and bonds did a little of both.

in baseball, there are 5 tools. one of them is hitting for average, or for contact. This is where tony gwynn fits in.
