Is Tony Gwynn the greatest hitter of all-time?
Posted by cubsfan5150 on 6/17/14 at 7:15 am00
I think so.
He's the only guy in the top 20 batting averages of all time that played after 1960, when there's little doubt that pitchers didn't throw as hard and you saw far fewer pitchers during a given game/week.
The only comparable is Ted Williams, IMO, but if I had to have a guy put a bat on the ball to win the game, it would no doubt be Gwynn.
In a game that was juiced up from the 80's on, Gwynn was able to still find a niche even though he was unlike most other superstars.

If you are talking sending one guy up to get a hit to win the game... That's a legit list.

You don't think Gwynn would have hit .400 in Cobb's time?

Ok. Fair enough, but him saying that Gwynn was just a batting avg hitter and Cobb was not is absurd.

one guy hit .338 for his career and the other hit .366. the 28 point difference is several orders of magnitude more impressive
Ty Cobb also stole a crap ton of bases and had over 4000 hits
Gwynn was a fine hitter, but people fall in love with his never striking out. The guy had an OBP of .388, which for a .338 career hitter is pretty low
