Best pure hitter I ever saw in person. Watched him live several times in the Astrodome. His ability to go the other way was truly an art form. He always looked so goofy/unathletic on deck and coming up to the plate but his ability to see the ball and always get a base knock was amazing. If I ever have a son, I will try my best to teach him to be like Tony Gwynn at the plate. Forget the long ball, just put it in play, and dont be afraid to go the other way.

I'm pretty sure the OP meant to say contact hitter. Gwynn is without a doubt one of the best contact hitters of all time.

Good read. Thanks for posting.

I did not realize how great of a ball player Tony was.

An all time great, but for some reason seems to be under appreciated.

I guess I should have specified more, but yes, contact hitter. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, typically when the experts where talking greatest hitters, they were talking about the Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynns, and Rod carews of baseball.

True...in terms of hitting for average, power and low strike outs, he was in the top 3 of all time. Tony Gwynn is not in the top 50.

Tony Gwynn is absolutely the greatest pure hitter in MLB history. And if you need me to define "pure hitter" for you then maybe you should stick to college football.

Gwynn played in a deeper league than Kaline, Williams, and Ty Cobb. He faced pitching specialists and rarely struck out. How many Lee Smiths did those other guys face?

...which is another way of you saying you can't quantify it in any meaningful way either.

In my era, yes. Im 35 yrs old btw. But the extensive reasearch I have done (listening to pops) it has to be Ted. But if I listened to gramps, its Cobb. So, no one knows.

I find your screen name offensive

Did you get approval for it from the various Apache tribes? The Obama administration? Stephen A. Smith?

Senator Liz Warren from Massachusetts gave me her blessing. As did ESPN's Jemele Hill.

What's incredible is that Mays & Aaron are the only 2 players to have 3,000 hits, 500 HR, and a .300 lifetime average, yet there are two current players (Cabrera & Pujols) that are currently on track for that same achievement (and both currently have 15-20pt higher lifetime averages).

And if Chris Davis doesn't go all HAM last year, Miggy would've won the triple crown two years in a row. Unbelievable.
