This World Cup may be the best worldwide sporting event ever in history.
I'm not sure I would go that far because I think the increased attention in the US is due solely to the event being held (in part) here. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but Americans thinking it is "the best worldwide sporting event ever in history" (a pretty high bar) is because this is the first time in 32 years the average American (non-soccer fan) had much reason to pay attenion.
That said, it certainly hasn't been a "flop". The majority of people I know who aren't soccer fans in general are at least paying some degree of attention. Unfortunately, I think that falls WAY off if the US loses tonight.

It’s literally the opposite of this. I think the fact that it’s here is hiding how big it’s been to us. Makes it seem like other big sporting events we have yearly.
This has been huge. The stadiums we have. What are country can effortlessly provide visitors.
Euros have been flabbergasted

The amount of stupidity displayed in this thread should be studied. Holy shite.

You are missing the point
The average American, even one interested in this WC, turns on these games and just sees a big games and pageantry.
They are used to big games and pageantry. It’s not immediately obvious how big it is.
We didn’t have to build stadiums and infrastructure. The world just showed up and we put on the show.

Well, my Knicks won, I'm fairly pleased with that still. Time to watch one of these World Cup games, I reckon.

To a degree, but they are also more experienced and it is showing.
Their roster is peppered with Premiere League players who have been in many big games with big crowds.

U.S.A. gotta dig deep + hope fatigue sets in late 2nd half for Belgium

First match I've watched, but Belgium looks way better as a team.

We struggle making clean passes. When we do make a good pass, we can't do anything with it.
