Not as good as Man O War.

I'm still championing Eddy Merckx in cycling or Gretzky in hockey. Merckx was obscenely great - he even won a Tour de France when he got attacked by a fan.

Is Tony Hawk the GOAT or is he just the first really great one in his sport that everyone rememebers.
I mean, everyone knows who Tony Hawk is, even if you don't watch X-games stuff.

Don't know crap about hockey but I guess I'd go Gretzky.

I think Babe Ruth is clearly #2.

Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player by virtuall everyone, there are at least arguments for the other sports GOAT.

This is stupid. You could make an argument for anyone in any sport, there will just be flaws in that argument. Some people say Bobby Orr was better than Wayne Gretzky. Are they right? No but they can still argue the fact.

Semmy Schilt been mentioned yet? The greatest kick boxer of all time and its by a pretty decent margin.

Is it really clear that he's the greatest kickboxer of all time? I think a good argument could be made for Peter Aerts (who holds a winning record over Schilt) or a few other guys.

Jordon took a "break" to play baseball in the prime of his basketball career and still is without question the goat in basketball. Imagine if he'd kept playing

who is Jordon?

I mentioned him and I was surprised he didn't get any mentions either. It's probably the horrible record against Nadal that prevents people from thinking he's the undisputed GOAT.

Completely unrelated to this thread, but Nadal just lost to Verdasco for the first time ever in the round of 16 at Madrid. I wonder when the last time he lost so early on clay was

Hate to break it to you but Eddy Merckx is the GOAT in cycling. It's not even debatable.

Nadal on clay might be the most dominant athlete in any sport. Everybody hates the blue clay on Madrid anyway. Djokovic struggled against some no-name player yesterday and Federer barely beat Raonic yesterday. It's really a clay tournament with an asterisk.

Maradona is in the same conversation as Pele, so I wouldn't mention Pele in this thread.
