In this $$ Driven NIL era with $40M rosters, I'm disappointed with how much week 1 sucks

The commissioner of college football must fix this at once. What a god awful opening weekend for your sport. Fans getting squeezed for every dollar to pay these dudes millions to play a half game against Northwest County Basketweaving Community College.
#1 Ohio State vs Ball State
#2 Oregon vs Boise (it's a watch given the weak slate)
#3 Georgia vs Tennessee State
#4 Notre Dame vs Wisconsin (a brand match-up at least)
#5 Texas v Texas State
#6 Indiana v North Texas
#7 Miami v Stanford
#8 A&M v Missouri State
#9 Ole Miss v #24 Louisville (our only ranked match-up)
#10 Oklahoma v UTEP
#11 LSU v Clemson
#12 Texas Tech v Abeline Christian
#13 Alabama vs East Carolina
#14 BYU v Utah Tech
#14 USC v Fresno
#16 Michigan v Western Michigan
#17 Washington v Washington State
#18 Penn State v Marshall
#19 SMU v Florida State
#20 Tennessee v Furman
#21 Utah v Idaho
#22 Iowa v Northern Illinois
#23 Houston v Oregon State
#25 Missouri v Arkansas Pine Bluff
Of the top 25 teams, 16 are playing cupcake nothing games. I wish to live in America where I don't have to wait weeks to watch a consistently competitive slate of college football games.

It is now absolutely proven that it does not pay to schedule good opponents out of conference

which makes it even more baffling that we went to 9 games AND require a p4 OOC
Sankey got schooled

Downstream effect of playoff expansion and conference realignment.

Totally agree there's no reason to schedule tough games and risk an extra L. I'm just saying I'm tired of the garbage tune-up games. If they're going to behave like pro sports leagues, let's get straight into a real schedule. No more playing your walk ons in the 4th quarter of a 55-3 game.

I thought the expanded playoff would lead to more big matchups as teams would take on the risk knowing they could lose a game or two and get in the playoff. But, it has gone the other way -- take no risk in the nonconference, muck out a 10-2 after conference play and get in.

Good non-conference games are dead, They have been being cancelled right and left for the upcoming years.
The committee punishes losses more than they reward hard schedules.
Avoiding losses is the best way to the playoff so people are just loading up on cream-puff non-conference.

You’re putting too much emphasis on fake rankings
These are all solid matchups to start the season

Carolina was supposed to open with Miami in Columbia but we cancelled when the SEC went to 9 conference games.
We also cancelled all of our future series against UNC, NC State, and Virginia Tech
I hate contemporary college football.

I think the elites are content spending on the roster and trusting that to get them to a top 1/3rd in the conference, which if you're in the big ten or sec, that's a playoff spot.

The CFP committee shares a lot of the blame too by ignoring SOS. Indiana and SMU played doo-doo schedules in 2024, yet got in ahead of 3 SEC teams that beat each other up in the regular season. Last year JMU gets in ahead of several teams who played far tougher schedules.
When your actions tell coaches SOS doesn't matter then they are going to schedule in a manner where SOS doesn't matter

It’s Week 1.
- Fans are generally so eager for football that a handful of decent matchups will satisfy their appetite.
- With no preseason, strict rules limiting offseason and preseason practices, and the yearly roster turnover, schools are increasingly hesitant to schedule a tough opponent in Week 1.
- Weeks 2 and 3 have some dynamic games featuring some of the most highly anticipated matchups of the season.
Ohio State - Texas
OU - Michigan
Ole Miss - LSU

Clemson and LSU were two of the best when the series was scheduled - can’t really predict what will happen in the meantime.

the covid sec schedule was built for NIL rosters

With no credit for strength of schedule expect more of it.

What does NIL have to do with week 1 scheduling?

Completely agree.
If you can afford a $20 Million+ football roster, you can play a schedule that doesn’t include FCS teams. At a minimum, at least schedule Top 40 G6 opponents for your easy games and homecoming.
