In the old days, the transfer portal would have never survived

As I listened to CBK's interview yesterday, the thing that stuck out to me was his statement about how he was going to meet with Heard and his parents when they returned from the bowl game. I can't speak for everyone, but in the old days (those 50 and older), I feel confident in saying 99% of the time there was no need for a meeting. If you made a commitment, you saw it through to the end, period!
I can remember in middle school my buddies talked me into playing baseball, even though I loved basketball and football much more. I started at third base and in the third game this big boy hits one to the fence and tried to stretch it into a triple, but I was waiting with the ball and he was called out. The problem was he absolutely bulldozed me and injured my shoulder and I was out for the remainder of the season. I tried to quit the team because I couldn't do anything but watch, but my parents said I made a commitment and I was made to go to every practice and every game. Even though I didn't agree with it at the time, it made me realize moving forward that if I made a commitment, I had a responsibility to see it through to the end.
My parents used to say all the time, "Your word is your bond," and even though I didn't understand what they meant at the time, I realized later the importance of those words and it played a major role in how I lived my life and how I raised my own kids.
This "it's all about me" generation just blows my mind and it's a big reason why our society is so screwed up. I never thought I would live to see a teenager walk onto a college campus and make demands about money and playing time, but it's now the reality of college football.
My hope is that when Heard's parents meet with CBK, they will apologize for their son's actions and inform coach that their son made a commitment to LSU and he will be spending the rest of his college career being a Tiger.
Unfortunately, we all know that's likely not happening and Tiger Nation will have to wait with bated breath on what this teenager decides to do and how much more will it cost us!

Scholarships are for one year

Coaches have just as much power to push players to go into the portal as player have to enter it. So, there’s that.

Players also get processed every year. Where's all the outrage and concern for them?
ETA - did I just say the same thing as you?

In the old days you had four year scholarships.
In the old days a kid wasn’t likely to be paid tens of millions of dollars.
In the old days a kid’s coaches didn’t make millions of dollars.
A lot has changed. Telling a kid to sacrifice for the good of the team id great, but when they see their coaches bolt for better deals and leave them hanging they have to wonder.

Would you leave your job for a 10% raise? How about 50%? It’s hard me to judge someone trying to get more money because I’ve definitely left jobs for more money before. But frick him if he leaves

Everyone around here claims to be free marketeers and the like, but when it comes to sports, it's like they believe in feudalism or something.

It shouldn’t amaze you. People are fans of a team/school. Very rarely are people fans of a particular player. Or at least not bigger fans of a player than the team.
Fans (generally) want what they perceive as best for their team. Good players leaving is not good for the team.

While I agree, until these (adult) coaches start fulfilling their contracts, it’s hard for me to expect these (teenagers/young adults) to fulfill their commitment.
ETA: for every player people complain about leaving, there’s dozens of players to commit to a school only to have another player eventually take their scholarship. But it’s called “processed” when it happens to them.

Yeah, no one ever quit or changed anything 50 years ago.
No one ever dropped out of school, the first girl you dated you married, divorce didn’t exist, regardless if you hated her or not, everyone stuck with the first job as a paper boy - it’s quite amazing how many retired 65 year old paper boys we have nowadays.
Silly nostalgic takes like this are hilarious. All the member berries.

Did the coach promise him he would be the LT? If so, maybe he broke his word.

Holy revisionist history there, Batman.
In the old days, there were still transfers and attrition on an annual basis in order to get to the mandated roster cap. The players who chose to leave or had their scholarship non-renewed by the school left for other opportunities, but the onus of finding a new home was on the player. All the portal did was put all the names of transfers in one place to allow the coaches better access to transferring players, shifting the legwork to the coaches from the players.

I have always conceptualized the team-school-players as a united entity. Obviously, no longer the case. Cognitive dissonance has arrived.

Don't you think that there have been some fundamental changes in the CFB game from NIL and the portal? This is a different era.
"Recruiting" the portal didn't exist until recently.
